Daily Thanksgiving

By MARIETTA FULLER Guest Writer At Thanksgiving time our thoughts revert to our Pilgrim Fathers at Plymouth. They had just passed through a year of famine, of sickness, of death and wanted to thank God for his many blessings and especially for providing food so generously in the fall harvest. In 1863, Thanksgiving Day became a national celebration when President Lincoln proclaimed in the midst of the Civil War a day for expressing gratitude to God. Truly, however, there should be daily thanksgiving. Some suggestions are given below. Every day should start with thanking God for another day of life and perhaps singing or saying Psalm 118:24: “This is the day the Lord hath made, we will rejoice and be glad in it.” Thanking God for our daily bread includes not only physical but also spiritual bread which comes from the Bible. (Luke 4:4) We should not forget to thank God for salvation through Jesus (II Cor. 9:15) and to thank Jesus for paying our sin debt in full on the Old Rugged Cross. In Thess. 5:18 the Bible says, “In everything give thanks.” Darkness can be dispelled by the “light of His Word” and this is a blessing, for how can we thank God for the following unless we know that purging helps us to Youth to hold sole The youth group of North Webster Church of God, SR 13, North Webster, will be holding a sidewalk sale this Saturday from 9-4 in front of the church. They will be selling new gloves, hats and scarves. In case of rain, the sale will be held at the house north of the church. All proceeds go to the youth group of the church.

bear more fruits of the Spirit (Jn. 15:2 and Gal. 5:22-23); sickness, accidents, disasters, misfortunes, etc. in our lives finally result in good for the child of God (R0m.8:28-29); tribulations can be of help in our comforting others in their times of trouble (II Cor. 1:3-4); death and sorrow can bring comfort from His rod and staff (Psalm 23); weakness brings strength through Christ (Phil. 4:13); chastening restores us to righteousness (Heb. 12:11 and Job 5:17); and throughout all of these and many more, God may be conforming us to Jesus (Rom. 8:29). As during the day, when as someone helps, encourages, lifts up our sorrow, gives comfort, or makes our dark day into a bright one; as we receive spiritual bread from hearing someone on radio, TV, or in person; and as we receive letters or recall what some person has meant to us, we can say the verse from Phil. 1:3: “I thank my God upon every remembrance of you. ” “Let not the blessings we receive daily from God make us

Profile of a new church

I By GLEN LONG Staff Writer This profile of the most recently formed church in the MilfordSyracuse area is largely information given by Tom and Ned Speicher. It contains only parts of the total by-laws and statement of faith and teachings of Wawasee Community Bible Church. The founders of the Wawasee Community Bible Church are grateful for their strong fundamental background in Bible teachings. A rich heritage which emphasized the sanctity of the family created in them a desire to share their convictions with others. Feeling a need for a new outreach effort in the area, the Wawasee Community Bible Church was formed. The primary objective of the group is to be true to the teachings of Jesus Christ, with an emphasis in local evangelization. Tom Speicher, Milford, is pastor of the new church, whose statement of faith consisting of seven pages has been written and is being printed for distribution to anyone who is interested. The church government consists of a rotating board of five elders who serve three year terms and who, as is the pastor, are elected by the congregation after prayerful consideration. The current board of directors, in addition to the pastor, includes Ned Speicher, chairman; Tim Steffen, secretary; Steve Kaiser, treasurer; and Steve Haab. member. The church group originally planned to purchase the Concord Church, located north of Dewart Lake, from the North Indiana Conference of Methodist Church, Inc. However, growth of the congregation has exceeded expectations and the size of that church building will not accommodate Sunday attendance, which has averaged more than 120 worshipers over the past two months and reached 190 last Sunday,

Pleased that their new church, which presently is renting space on Sundays at the Milford school, is reaching out to new people and helping fill their spiritual needs, the board is still searching for an existing facility. If no suitable existing facility is found, the board is planning to build a new church building. A committee is evaluating several sites between the Milford and Syracuse communities and financial support has been offered to allow building of a modest initial church structure. If it is needed it is hoped that construction can begin in the spring of 1987. What They Believe Pastor Speicher said the church believes in a labor of love for our Lord Jesus Christ. In order to create a vibrant congregation of participators all church offices, including the pastor, are unpaid positions. The church is strongly based in scripture. Its statement of faith includes “We teach that the Bible is the written word of God, verbally inspired in every word, absolutely without error in the original documents. We teach that the Bible alone constitutes infallible and final authority in faith and life.” The church teaches that two sacraments have been committed to the local church, baptism and the Lord’s supper. Christian St. Andrew's food drive coming The youth group at St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church in Syracuse will be conducting a door-to-door food drive on Sunday, Nov. 16, between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. Items collected will be placed in the Syracuse community food pantry to be distributed to help needy families. Debbie Kirkdorfer can be called at 457-4763 to make arrangements for items to be picked up if donors will not be home during the regular drive.

baptism by immersion is the testimony of a believer demonstrating forth his faith in the crucified and risen Saviour and his union with Him in death to sin and resurrection to a new life. The Lord’s supper is in remembrance of His death and should always be preceded by solemn self-examination The outreach program of the church is stated in the purpose section of its by-laws, “The purpose of this church shall be to maintain the public worship of Almighty God; to edify and strengthen the church through Christian fellowship and Bible teaching; to carry on an active progress of local evangelization; to propogate the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world in keeping with the Great Commission and the doctrines and practices of our church.” Sunday morning worship service is from 11 a.m. to noon. In keeping with its belief that children and adults should study the word of God, Sunday School classes are provided from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. These include nursery, 0-3 years; pre-school, 3-5 years; primary, kindergarten to second grade, intermediate, grades three to five; junior high, grades six to eight; high school, grades nine to 12; and adult. Visitors are always welcome to worship at Wawasee Community Bible Church. Any person desiring membership or wanting to serve in the church shall give satisfactory evidence of regeneration by testimony of his faith. He shall express his approval of the constitution of the church, including the statement of faith. Inquiries regarding membership shall be made through a member of the official board. The world cannot always understand a person’s profession of faith, but it can understand service. — lan Maclaren

*KKKP QUHT AND LISTEN TO MET Paul stood on the stairs and motioned to the people to be quiet; soon a deep silence enveloped the crowd, and he addressed them in Hebrew as follows: "Brothers and fathers, listen to me as I offer my defense." (When they heard him speaking in Hebrew, the silence was even greater.) "I am a Jew," he said, "born in Tarsus, a city in Cilicia, but educated here in Jerusalem under Gamaliel, at whose feet I learned to follow our Jewish laws and customs very carefully. I became very anxious to honor God in everything I did, just as you have tried to do today. And I persecuted the Christians, hounding them to death, binding and delivering both men and women to prison. "The High Priest or any member of the Council can testify that this is so. For I asked them for letters to the Jewish leaders in Damascus, with instructions to let me bring any Christians I found to Jerusalem in chains to be punished." Acts 21:40: 22:1-5
