You and your pet — Dog has food hypersensitivity
Dear Dr. Wise: Butch, our seven-month-old German Shepherd suddenly started scratching. his skin is red all over, but we didn’t see any fleas. Our veterinarian suggested there is a good possibility that our dog has a food hypersensitivity. Since we’ve never heard of this before, could you please give us more information? Answer: Food hypersensitivity occurs in both dogs and cats. It is not surprising that you have never heard of it — it is an uncommon skin problem which is diagnosed in less than one percetft of dermatology cases treated by veterinarians. An animal with food hypersensitivity actually becomes allergic to certain materials in their food. Beef products are usually he culprit. When humans are allergic to something, we sneeze; allergies affect our respiratory system. In dogs and cats allergies manifest themselves by causing an overall itching sensation. Allergies affect skin-level nerve endings in animals causing a mild pain sensation similar to the feeling poison ivy causes in humans However the symptom of itching does not confirm a diagnosis of food hypersensitivity. Food allergies are just one of many different types of allergies. Plus there are other more common reasons for constant scratching such as fleas, bacterial infections and allergies to pollens or molds. These common causes of scratching must be eliminated before a food allergy is suspected Remember, a food allergy is quite uncommon so common problems must be ruled-out first. Indeed your dog is showing classic signs of food hypersensitivity: .he sudden and marked onset of itching and scratching, the overall redness of his skin, the young age of your dog and the fact that fleas have been eliminated as a cause of the it-

ching. These signs all help to indicate a food allergy. Your veterinarian probably has noted also that your dog has not responded to medications which help other types of allergies. Again, since a food allergy is not common, it is diagnosed through a prcyess of elimination. A final test to confirm a food allergy is a food test. Treatment involves putting your dog on a hypoallergenic diet. Brown rice and chicken are frequently prescribed. Obviously, if the itching stops, the food allergy is confirmed. A positive response tosthe new diet can be seen as soon as a few days, or may take as long as three to four weeks. Food hypersensitivity,,is chronic, the hypoallergenic diet must be continued throughout your pet's life. Even the smallest

treat, or break in the diet may exacerbate the itching. Contrary to other allergies, there is no medication to relieve the itchiness and red skin symptoms; only the hypoallergenic diet can produce positive results. Food hypersensitivity is an uncommon malady, however German Shepherds and Shar Peis show a slightly higher percentage of responsibility. Clarification: In a recent col umn which described how to eliminate fleas from your pets and your household, chlordane was stated as being, “effective in treating infested lawns.” It should be noted that chlordane can only be used lawfully as a foundation treatment and must be professionally applied by a licensed exterminator. ; Provided as a public service by the In diana Veterinary Medical Association. >
