Kahle shooting for the top
Bv MARK HUFFMAN Staff Writer Borrowing a familiar phrase from sports lore, Judy Kahle is “shooting for the top”, in her hobby, a spot that most would believe she’s already obtained as 1986 National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association Women's Champion, hut which she hopes to add to. - “Next year’s goal is the same and mojre/Z she laughs, referring to the Women’s National Championship held in Friendship, Ind., on the national rifle range. Men, also compete on the grounds, with over 2,000 shooters coming from all over the nation. I Profile “There are several different levels of competition. such as in pistol, primitive, and silhouette shooting, while individual and aggregate matches offer prizes,” Judy says, noting that she topped all other woman shooters in points earned in individual t matches to cop the top aggregate trophy. f "I didn’t even know I had won until I asked the former champion I’d just hoped to place somewhere.” she says. - The Syracuse resident did more than just place, adding to a shelf full of medals and trophies won by her and her husband of 22 years. Monte. The pair moved to Syracuse from Adnan. Mich., after taking over the operation of Carter Plumbing Electric & Heating in New Paris in 1975. “We had our own plumbing business but it grew so large that we didn't want to develop it anymore,” Judy says, noting that Monte was offered the managerial position at Carter soon after and the couple ventured south, with Judy acting as assistant manager. Living in Syracuse and belonging to no clubs or organizations kept the Kahles from becoming familiar with their surroundings and bored with “sitting around the house. ” 1

Stone’s Trace Regulators, a muzzle loading club in Cromwell, provided the northerners the outlet they desired. “We went to one of their festivals and thought it looked fun,” Judy remembers, and after learning the nature of the gun from her husband, she was on her way to her first national meet in 1982. “My first year I entered I won a third place award, then got some gold medals after that,” she says of the trips that built up to this year’s top, award. “Monte has won several medals in the men’s competition, he goes to nationals twice a year,” Judy remarks, referring to her husbands vivid interest in the sport. He also assists conservation officers in giving hunter safety courses in schools. A daughter, Carmel, 21, two sons, Shane, 17, and Shwn. 15, help make shooting a family affair, with all five having gone to nationals and other area tournaments. “It’s really enjoyable, there are no jealousies among the people competing,” Judy says, adding, “It takes a special type of person. ” With a shooting season that lasts from April until the end of October, those “special people” are often kept busy throughout the summer months. "Practice also takes up your time,” Judy says, “I practice according to the level of competition; before I go to nationals I go out and shoot three to four times a week.” Practice includes shooting clay targets and other obstacles from 50 to 200 feet away. “I also dry shoot in the house to help my stability,” the marksman says, referring to the method of aiming the gun and pulling the trigger on air. Vowing to continue her hobby until she can’t lift the rifle (which can be an arduous task considering the bench rifles used in various competition are over 40 pounds and five feet long). Judy concludes, “I want to prove to myself it wasn't luck the first time around.”
