It’s a fair question because there are some things that one can do that help, but other things that can make a situation worse. Person; cannot avoid facing people problems. One feels the need for a professional counseling course but that is not necessary for giving support, understanding and some encouragement toward making a decision for change. respect for the other person. He or she may be anxious but with good eye contact, one can give a clear sense of “being with” the person in need. 2) Listen actively to carefully pick up what the other person is saying, not only in words, but in attitude and expression. Active listening involves summing up what the other says and asking whether this is what he or she means. Clarity of the problem is a must. 3) Respond with support by perhaps nodding the head or by verbally encouraging the person to go on, such as “tell me more.” 4) Question properly so that information is acquired but also rapport is maintained. Openended questions are especially effective in giving the parson a chance to express his or her genuine thoughts or feelings. Open questions are “what do you think ..or “how do you feel.. The person can expand rather than just say “yes” or “no.” One must see things from the other person’s perspective. 5) Reflect on feelings so that

Helping the person identify his or her problem enables that person to come up with ideas on the solution. 7) Periodically summarizing feelings and content are necessary. 8) Responding with interpretation is another way that a listener and support person can be of great help. Giving interpretation from another viewpoint may help to clarify decision-making. It may not be “the answer,” but it is an answer worth considering along with others. 9) Be vary careful about offering advice. It is much more important for the person to work out his or her own solutions rather than to be told what to do. 10) The support person can be of great help by encouraging a commitment to change.
