The third annual Hoosiers Against Drunk Driving Conference was attended by four members of the Wawasee High School SADD Chapter and Marilynne Curtis, sponsor. The conference was held August 9-10, at Ball State University, Muncie. Attending with Mrs. Curtis were Cindy Nelson. Pam Colley. Joni Bodkin and Erin Watson. These four will be leading the Wawasee SADD Chapter this year. The local group meets twice a month and has 70 members. Sponsored by the Governor's Task Force to Reduce Drunk Driving and Ball Brothers Foundation, the conference is the onlyone of its kind in the nation.

The students experienced a risk taking activity discussing the pros and cons of taking risks. The project included tasks such as making predictions, collecting data, small and large group presentations, reporting data, and completing a bar graph. Marion County Prosecutor and Task Force Chairman, Stephen Goldsmith, welcomed the students in the opening ceremonies. “Indiana has the most active high school drunk driving prevention efforts in the country.” Goldsmith stated. “This conference has brought together 600 students from 170 high schools representing 73 counties in Indiana. Here you will be given the opportunity to share ideas*? and take the initiative for implementing a drunk driving prevention program in your community.” Goldsmith went on to commend the conference participants, “Because of the continued efforts made by you and your peers,
1,300 fewer deaths and injuries occur each year.” In addition to Goldsmith, other feature speakers were Bill Essex, a former undercover narcotics agent and presently a drug/alcohol consultant; entertainer Bob Stromberg; Marion County Juvenile Judge Jim Payne; and John Reed who shares his personal experience with drunk driving. Other highlights of the conference were breakout sessions led by state and local experts in the drunk driving and project implementation area, a candlelight vigil, and a model chemical-free party.

The success of the event can be attributed to the outstanding efforts of all of the students in selling the tickets.
