Snowmobilers plan party Lakeland Snowmobile Club members met October 7 at the North Webster School cafeteria. There were 40 persons in attendance. A carry-in dinner was served with the tables being decorated in keeping with the Halloween theme. Hosts for the evening were Mr. and Mrs. Frank Stone. An outing and Halloween party are planned for 6 p.m. on October 25 at the Trojan Track. Further plans were made for the Winter Carnival. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the North Webster Volunteer Fire Department and the EMS. It was decided that a snow queen will be chosen for this year’s carnival. Reservations are now being accepted for upcoming club trips to northern Indiana and Michigan. Trip attendance will not be limited to club members. Anyone wishing more information, should call Larry Barrett or Mrs. Calvin Packard. Several members of the Lakeland club will be attending the Indiana Snowmobile Association convention being held the second weekend in November at Indianapoiijr. It was noted that members are purchasing jackets, imprinted with the club logo As a special surprise, Norman Barrett was presented with a decorated cake in honor of his birthday Jeff Com is to be coordinator of the club newsletter. It is requested that all classified ads be turned in early. The board of directors is scheduled to meet the last Wednesday of October Educational and entertaining programs and events are being planned for each month during the year. A Thanksgiving carry-in dinner is planned for 6:30 p.m. on November 7, at Webster School Mr and Mrs The snowmobile organization. Guests prospective members are always welcome. Make final plans for open house at fire station The North Webster Firemen Ladies’ Auxiliary met October ft at the fire station. The fund drive appreciation dinner, held recently at the North Webster School cafeteria, was discussed. Approximately 100 persons were served. Plans were finalized for an open house at the fire station on October 11. Discussion was held pertaining to the quilt moneymaking project, the nomination of officers and serving meals for the election board in November Refreshments were served by Dian Bowman. Tippy Lee meets on October 1 Irene Robinson was hostess and Veva Shepherd was cohostess for the October I meeting of the Tippy Lee Club. Mary Strong led the group singing and Rosemary Sellers read the meditation There was a group discussion pertaining to the club anniversary party held in September It was announced that donations have been made to the United Way, Boy Scouts, and Leesburg Daisy Troop Craft items for the Christmas bazaar are to be brought to the next meeting. The lesson, “Updating Your Wardrobe,” was presented by Juanita Allen. Claudia Archer and Mrs. Allen received the door prizes. Mrs. Archer will be hostess for the November meeting. She will be assisted by Jan Barger. I Seniors go on "Fall Color Tour" The North Webster Senior Citizens group went on its annual “Fall Color Tour” on October 8. Penny Hollis and Dorothy Snoke were co-chairpersons for the event. The 53 persons in attendance left the church at 9:20 a.m. aboard vans, cars, and the church bus. Antique shops at Silver Lake and Mentone were toured by the group.

MARTHA MANN was lay speaker for the October 12 Sunday morning service, at North Webster United Methodist Church. Her topic was “Stepping Stones or Stumbling Blocks." NORTH WEBSTER School open house is scheduled for October 21, from 6;30-8 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. Newly remodeled and redecorated areas of the building may be seen. The noon meal was served at Mentone. The Senior Citizens then toured the Bell Aviation Museum and an egg processing plant at Mentone. The group arrived back at the church at 4p.m. An “Autumn Auction” is scheduled for the November meeting with Norma Sliger as chairperson. Honor members of club's anniversary dinner party Charter members were honored during the anniversary dinner party of the Pierceton Extension Homemakers which was held on October 6 at Warsaw. Sara Scott asked the blessing before the meal was served. Individual favors of potted herbs and spices and small wreaths, made of herbs and spices, were at each place setting. A program about herbs and spices was presented. President Doris Kubacki conducted a short business meeting. She read excerpts from old meeting minutes and records. I left the house to run some errands. It never occurred to me that the case might be bothered. When I stepped into the kitchen, I couldn't believe my eyes. There was a three-inch hole right through the middle of my beautiful cake —o— The cats. Stoker and Fooler, were sitting in the dining room looking as innocent as lambs. My “not so gentle” search for telltale cake crumbs on paws, whiskers and upper lips was in vain. Those two critters had polished themselves as clean as a whistle. I considered doing something awful to both of them, but I
answered with readings and items of interest to WCTU. Devotions were given by Mrs. Johnson. Her theme was “Power of Understanding.” She read from Proverbs 3:5-6 and Philipians 4:5-7. Betty Barrett read an article about “Smokeless Tobacco.” The minutes of the last meeting were read by Eva Lock. Mrs. Barrett gave the treasurer’s report. The business session closed with group prayer. Zelma Kile will be hostess for the November 3 meeting. Goodwill Club enjoys a day in South Bend A luncheon at Tippecanoe Place, South Bend, highlighted the October 8 birthday party of the Goodwill Extension Homemakers Club. May Burke. Albany, Ore., was a guest. Betty Jo Roberts, president, reported on the recent president’s council meeting and conducted a short business session. The group voted to participate in the county homemakers reading program. Following the luncheon, the group toured the Century Center, the Studebaker Museum and the Notre Dame campus.

Serving our country IAV T LEHMAN Airman Jay T. Lehman, son of Richard F. and Marilyn R. Lehman of r 5, Syracuse, has graduated from Air Force basic training at Lackland Air Force Base. Texas. During the six weeks of training, the airman studied the Air Force mission, organization and customs and received special training in human relations. In addition, airmen who complete basic training earn credits toward an associate degree through the Community College of the Air Force.

10 YEARS AGO, OCT. 12. 1976 The Lakeland Kiwanis club s ladies’ night held September 27 at Camelot hall turned into a surprise recognition dinner to honor Lorin J. Badskey of North Webster with a life membership, the 370th in the world. Badskey also received a 30-year legion of honor award. Helen Cline was hostess for the October 4 meeting of Charm N Chatter Home Extension club. Helen Anderson assisted the hostess. Richard Mitchell served as chairman for the fish fry held last week end at the North Webster Lions Club building. The event was sponsored by the North Webster Volunteer Firemen. Members of Sechrist Sixty Five home extension club met October 6 in the home of Janet Hamman. Laurel Shoemaker assisted the hostess. Velda Amick was welcomed as a new member during the October 6 meeting of Barbee Hoosier club. A “Pound Party ” to help a needy family was scheduled for the November meeting. Election of officers was held. The new officers are: Ruth Butler, president; Goldie Hunnicutt, vice president; Fanny Scoville, secretary; Violet Lawson, treasurer. < 20 YEARS AGO.
