Homecoming festivities underway
A week of activities will come to a close Friday, Oct. 10, when the 1986 Wawasee High School Homecoming King and Hopecoming Queen are named during the half-time of the Wawasee football game. The ceremonies and parade are scheduled to take place between 8:30-9 p.m. Candidates for this years royalty are: Tressa Littleton, Kelly Lundy, Judy Schmahl, Ann Vitaniemi, Ben Beer, Tim Mangas, Chris Cotton and Nathan Rhoades. Milford. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Varsity Club and Student Representative Council. Beer is president of the senior class, captain of the football team, and also plays basketball and baseball. He enjoys music, especially guitar, and is a member of Varsity Singers. He plans to attend Indiana-Purdue University at Fort Wayne to study pre-medicine or business after highschool. Tressa Littleton, who will be escorted by Beer, is the 17-year-old daughter of Sheryll Donley, Syracuse. She belongs to the Drama Club/ National Honor Society, Future Educators of America, Students Against Driving Drunk, and Varsity Club. She has also participated on the gym nasties team for three years and enjoys signing and dancing. Miss Littleton plans to major in business at Indiana University. Cotton, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Cotton, Syracuse, is 18 years old and a member of the Varsity Club, Foreign Language Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and Student Represen tative Council. Cotton is a letterman in football and baseball. He has participated on the basketball team for two years. Some of his hobbies include reading, boating, and most athletics. Mangas is the 17-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Mangas. Syracuse. He is a member of the Varsity Club, being a two-year letterman in basketball and a three-year letterman in track. Mangas is also a member of the National Honor Society. He enjoys golf, reading, and music. He plans to attend college to major in economics. Julie Schmahl, escorted by Mangas, is the 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs Doug Schmahl, Syracuse. She has been a member of Student Representative Council. National Honor Society, and Varsity Club. She is a three-year varsity member of the gymnastics and swim teams, having earned six varsity letters Miss Schmahl enjoys sailing, playing piano, dancing, and water skiing. " Rhoades’ interests include hunting. fishing, horseback riding, and most athletics. Following high school, he will attend Purdue University to study chemical engineering. Ann Vitaniemi. escorted by Rhoades, is the 18-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Vitaniemi. Syracuse. She is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Future Educators nf America. Miss Vitaniemi is captain of the volleyball team, member of the basketball team, and has run track for two years Last year she was the recipient of the Mental Attitude Award in basketball. Her future plans will focus on elementary education at Purdue University. Activities Homecoming week at Wawasee has involved the students in numerous activities. Spirit Days are being held throughout the week. Monday, was Hawaiian Day; Tuesday, Truck and Dolly Day; and today < Wednesday) Opposite Sex Day. Favorite Era Day has been set for Thursday, Oct. 9, and Green and Gold Day, Buttons and Hats will be Friday. Mums will be on sale throughout the week, until Thursday during the fifth period lunch. The mums will be picked up during the noon hour on Friday with extra mums being sold during the game. A fall fling was scheduled Tuesday from 1:30-3:05 p.m. with the class decorations being set up between 3:05-9 p.m. and judged on Wednesday. County soil judging team wins contest The Wawasee FFA soil judging team won the 1986 Kosciusko County Soil Judging Contest last week, with Debra Schafer. Todd Roberts. Nate Myers, and David Schafer capturing the top four individual places, respectively. Another Wawasee team placed second, with Rieh Fifer, fifth individual; Terry Templin, sixth individual; Steve Davis, ninth individual; Brian Wuthrich, and Dave Rosenberry. The Wawasee students compiled 816 points enroute to the red ribbon Both teams have also qualified for the Area Soils Contest, which will be held in LaPorte County later this month. In earlier competition the local members competed in the Purdue Invitational Soil Judging Contest at West Lafayette In soil judging, contestants must be able to correctly identify different soil properties and tell how to proper ly manage that soil based upon their findings. Music Boosters discuss dances The Wawasee Music Boosters met Monday, Oct. 6, 7:30 p m., in the school choir room DJs for the next three dances have been secured. The program book was discussed. It was decided to go ahead with it because it is a good money maker and it builds rapport between the community and the high school music department. The school corporation is holding an auction on October 25. Music Boosters have been asked to do concessions. The musical “Carousel” will be >yieH November 15 and 16 with the 16th being a Sunday matinee. This is something new’ but will not conflict with football playoffs this way. The Maynard Fergeson concert was discussed and everyone was reminded to sell tickets for the October 15 concert. The next meeting is scheduled for November 3 at 7:30 p.m. in the choir room.

The second grade from Milford Elementary School recently went on an educational field trip to the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo. Before going on the trip the students studied about animals in the science book, saw a filmstrip on zoo animals and went through an educational packet sent to each classroom from the zoo. The
Homecoming dinner
The Music Department ot Wawasee High School is planning a special concert and pizza dinner for Homecoming Night on Friday. Oct. 10. in the commons area of the high school. The dinner will be served from 5-7 p.m. and the Variety Homecoming Show will take place during the dinner from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Performing in the Variety Show will be the Varsity Singers in their debut performance, the Dream Company. The Dream Company is a new addition to the music department and is a "swing” group composed of 15 women singers. Included in their performance will be "Don’t Sit Under The Apple Tree,” “Let Me Dance For You,” and "When I Grow Too Old To Dream," by Sigmund Romberg.

"Rocky Top.” and "If I Loved You." a selected preview from the fall musical to be presented in November. Also included in the show will be special musical selections performed by members from each group and "alumni" Varsity Singers. The dinner will include pizza, salad, and drink. Tickets may be purchased from members of the Varsity Singers and the Dream Company or at the door. Open house at North Webster North Webster School will be having its yearly open house on Thursday, Oct. 21, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The public will have the opportunity to walk throughout the newly remodeled and redecorated school and parents will be able to visit with teachers, counselors and administrators during the evening.
