Plymouth 'rocked' 20-0 as Wawasee remains undefeated
IBv MARK HUFFMAN Staff Writer The number one-ranked Warriors extended their undefeated season into the fifth week with a 20-0 thrashing of the Plymouth Rockies Friday night, Sept. 26. Standing atop the Northern Lakes Conference at 5-0, Wawasee utilized a stubborn defense that refused to break, despite yielding more yards ( 190) against Plymouth than in its four previous weeks. Labeled a “big play" team by Coach Myron Dickerson earlier in the week, Plymouth failed to live up to that name, with the offense unable to do more than march down the field and recoil from the endzone. “We did a good job of moving the ball, I was pleased with our progress,” Coach Tom Isenbarger said of the offensive effort, while Coach Dickerson concurred that the Rockies’ offensive line “kicked our defensive line’s tails.” Despite the defensive lapse the Warrior offense was able to in-

spire a respectable Wawasee crowd with a touchdown on its second possession of the night when quarterback Chris Cotton snuck around the right defensive end for an 18-yard gain with 2:48 left in the first quarter. A two-point attempt faded, but eight minutes later the Warriors were in the same position, with leading rusher Scot McDowell charging up the middle for a three-yard touchdown. This time Bruce Jackson was called on for the PAT. “If we hadn’t scored those two touchdowns early we would’ve given up a couple touchdowns," Coach Dickerson predicted, and although the defense was able to maintain its composure, Plymouth mounted drives of 60 and 63 yards in the game. The Rockies were stopped at the Warrior 15-yard line at the end of the first half when Plymouth signal caller Brent Osswald passed for one-yard as time ran out. A faked punt to running back Bob Harris highlighted the drive, with Harris converting a fourth down situation into the scoring opportunity.
Both teams failed to get on the board in the third quarter, although Plymouth threatened after marching 48 yards on the ground, to add to their overall total of 146 on the night. However, the Plymouth effort

was cut short when Osswald put the ball in the air from the Wawasee 14 twice and the defensive duo of Steve Briggs and Nate Rhoades swatted it away. Wawasee rounded out the scoring in the fourth quarter, with sophomore Mike Foy making use of his limited playing time by recovering the first of two fumbles (Plymouth managed to grab hold of a third) 27 yards from the endzone. Cotton faked a pass on fourth down, handing the ball to McDowell, who raced for 27 of his 73 yards and the final touchdown, extending his five game average of 5.59 yards per game. Jackson converted the PAT for the final score, 20-0. A miscue on the ensuing kickoff, with 6:23 remaining, spoiled any hopes of an upset, with the Warriors recovering a fumble at the Plymouth 23. A missed 42-yard field goal attempt seven plays later ended the game, with Jackson coming up short. “Two fumbles against a team of Wawasee’s caliber is going to kill you.” a dismayed Rockie
coach said, noting that "dur kids were hanging in there until that first fumble." * Plymouth out-gained the Warriors through the air 44-0, with Osswald connecting on five of 20 passes with two interceptions.
Cotton came up short on all three of his attempts. However, the rush provided the difference, with Wawasee out running the Rockies 166 to 146 Although he was happy to take the win, which assures Wawasee of its first winning regular season record since 1976, Coach Dickerson wasn't completely pleased with the effort. “Being rated number one isn't anything like playing number one, we just weren’t sharp,’’ he said, adding, “At least now we have something to get the players’ attention before the next game. ’ ’ That “next game’’ finds Wawasee going against the best offense it has seen all year. “This is our greatest offensive challenge, and we’ll have to turn it into a defensive contest,” Coach Dickerson said, referring to Warsaw’s area best average of 261 yards per game. “Steve Littlejohn is a threat every time he gets the ball," the Wawasee mentor lamented. The 5-6 running back blitzed the Goshen defense last week in an emotion-packed 29-28 win, sprinting for a 70-yard touchdown after a Redskin punt and adding another 74-vard score on a handoff. Verifying what Goshen Coach Randy Robertson found out last week. Coach Dickerson remarked. "They are an outstanding big play team with a lot of speed and quickness." The Wawasee defensive line will’ attempt to “bounce back" against a Warsaw scheme that features two running quarterbacks. in the form of Paul Wiley and backup Kevin Cox. “Wiley can do both (run and pass) while Cox didn't do a bad job of passing the ball last week. ' Coach Dickerson noted. Playing without the services of receiver Ben Beer, who was knocked out of the Plymouth game with a broken jaw, the Warrior Coach is hoping for a good defensive effort Beer will be out for at least six weeks. Briggs also suffered a deep thigh bruise and is questionable for Friday’s game at Wawasee Warsaw enters the contest at 3-2 (3-1 in the NLC>. the number-three ranked team even, and could easily have won. in only his first game. Considering the fact that Notre Dame has first call on millions of Catholic boys, as the most famous Catholic tootball tradition in the country, and being such a fine school, the talent is always thee. And Lou Holtz has established himself as one of the top coaches in the nation. That combination can t miss. Notre Dame has long played a schedule tougher than any other team in the country. The Irish could do this over the years having so much depth and talent. And in doing so. that forged a formidable team; it had to be formidable to play that schedule. This year is no exception. Games of special interest this season will be the clash with Air Force, which has beaten the Irish four straight, and Alabama, which can never seem to win against Notre Dame (even Bear Bryant’s team failed). The guess here is that Holtz will have a winning season this year, even with that schedule!
