Possible home of new congregation

Concord United Methodist Church has stood unused for several years on Rookstool Road just east of CR 300E, one mile north of Dewart Lake. A sales contract has been signed- by Eldred Mabie, owner of Milford Shoe and Clothing Store, to sell five acres of land surrounding the church for use by the new area church group, Wawasee Community Bible Church. It is his understanding that this group is in the process of also buying the church building and grounds from the United Methodist Church Conference. Concord Church was erected as a meetinghouse for community gatherings on land cleared in 1836. It was, in fact, the first meeting house in Van Buren Township. The church history states that a high fence was built around the building to keep out wild animals and Indians The area around the building became known as “Little Turkey Creek Prairie.” OTiL 'll*. >1 -< o/Tn nw VvSi HOme dinner and sapper set for Oct. 11 The Pierceton Presbyterian church is having its 87th ‘ ‘ Harvest Home ” dinner and supper on October 11. The times will be II a.m. — 2 p.m.. and 5-7:30 p.m. This event could not be accomplished without a lot of effort given by its members and even help from other community church members, family, and friends. Edith Stickler has been chairman for many years, and has been very efficient in making “Harvest Home” quite successful. The Collier families have done so much in this project; as well as Shirley Kreger, who sees that 100 chicken pies are baked just right every year. Many people come from miles around for the "Harvest Home meals and friendship. It is hoped more will add to this number.

In 1855 the meetinghouse was turned into a church sanctuary and deeded to the trustees of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Around the turn of the century, after a period when the Methodist congregation had dwindled, John Fisher, a member of the Church of the Brethren, remodeled the building and it was used by the United Brethren denomination after 1904. When the United Brethren joined with the Evangelicals the church became an EUB structure. Then with the merging of the EUB and Methodist churches it was back to Methodist. unnea meTnoaisr Church news The Milford United Methodist Church will hold worship service at Lakeland Loving Care nursing home on Wednesday, Oct.
