Warrior defense continues to dominate

By MARK HUFFMAN Staff Writer Setting the stage for what could be an early Northern Lakes Conference title tilt this week, Wawasee continued its defensive dominance in stopping Concord 3-0 last Friday, Sept. 12. The Warriors will face their biggest test of the season when they host the sixth-ranked Panthers of North Wood at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Sept. 19, with both teams sitting atop the conference at 3-0. Wawasee moved up to second in this week’s Associated Press poll. “Every game is becoming tougher, North Wood will be even tougher than this one," Coach Myron Dickerson said after a hard fought victory over the Minutemen Concord threatened several times but couldn’t find the end zone, with quarterback Pete Emkow being under constant pressure from the Warrior defense. Emkow was tackled for losses six time, for -23 yards rushing, while the remainder of the night found him being forced to pass off-balance The Minutemen’s biggest opportunity came in the third quarter, with punt returner Jason Warren returning a kick 48 yards to the Wawasee 13; however, two plays later Emkow found himself in a familiar position, being drug to the ground by Eric Jones for an 18-yard loss. Tim Carter and Eric McDowell also had sacks for Wawasee, with McDowell fueling the Warriors on offense as well. McDowell carried 18 times for lOlyards, more than Concord’s combined effort of 44-yards overall. , Junior Mike Meek' helped add to Wawasee’s total of 236 yards, running for 61 in the game, while Ben Beer was on the receiving end of three of Chris Cotton’s 14 passes for 30 yards. Three other passes were divided among the Warrior offense for 41 more yards The game's only score came off the foot of junior Bruce Jackson, who split the uprights from 33 yards out A 69-yard march preceded the kick, with Cotton completing three passes for 41 of those yards Turnovers also helped nullify scoring opportunities for both teams, with Emkow throwing four critical interceptions in Warrior territory and Cotton committing two miscues. However, the biggest story, according to Warrior coach Myron Dickerson, was the officiating. "It’s a shame when a team (Concord' gets more yardage from penalties than any other way," he said, obviously displeased with the seven penalties, which resulted in 74 vards. Concord was

Watch the Blue Jays

By PETE FRITCHIE WASHINGTON. DC. - The team to watch in the hottest Major League race in baseball this month is Toronto. The Blue Jays felt they shouldn't have lost to Kansas City last year in the playoffs. They’re spoiling to have another chance to get to the World Series, which means winning to the A.L. East. The Jays play the Sox six times in September < some games may have been played by the time you read this) and that might decide the issue. The Sox. who had led all year, have power hitting. So do the Jays. Pitching, as usual, will be the key. If Tom Seaver and Oil Can Boyd are hot. to back Roger Clemens, the Sox may go all the way. But Toronto has the edge in pitching and in experience in a tight race. They were awesome last year and this is the same team. New York Baltimore. Detroit and Cleveland for a time all had their rumbles. New York might still be in it. But Baltimore faded in August. Sparky Anderson's days at Detroit might be numbered At Cincinnati the brass thought Sparky was given Colby's opinion WASHINGTON - Former CIA Director William Colby, urging retention of the controversial SALT II treaty, said recently its abandonment would deprive the United States of valuable infor mation on Soviet missile tests and deployments.
