State convention of WCTU
The annual State Convention of the Woman’s Christian Temperance Union of Indiana will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 16 through Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Holiday Ihn, 5920 Scatterfield Road, in Alderson. Mrs. James Shelley of New Castle, state president, will preside throughout the convenReceives Hoosier Homestead award Two local farm families were invited to the main floor of the State Capitol in Indianapolis on Friday, Sept. 5, to receive their Hoosier Homestead Award, announced State Senator John Augsburger (R-Syracuse). The Hoosier Homestead Award ceremony, an ongoing program administered by the Indiana Department -of Agriculture, recognizes those farms which have been owned by the’same family for 100 years or more. Lt. Governor Mutz, Indiana’s commissioner of agriculture, was scheduled to present the awards in the statehouse ceremony at 9 a m. Friday. Families being honored from Senate District 13 include: Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Crowl, Sr., of Syracuse and Mr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Blosser of Nappanee. “Farming is a vital part of Indiana’s economy and the agricultural industry has had a very positive impact on our Hoosier heritage,” Augsburger stated. “I am especially pleased to see Indiana families and individuals recognized for their agricultural contributions during such difficult economic times for the farming comrriunity.” Augsburger explained that a farm property must produce at least SI,OOO worth of agricultural products or be a minimum size of 20 acres to be considered for the Hoosier Homestead Award. Also, proof of relationship must be established between the present owner and the owner of 100 years ago. tion —for which the theme will be “Power.” Headlining the program as speaker and convention guest will be Mrs. Winifred Kissling of Evanston, 111., WCTU national promotion director, a native Hoosier and a graduate of Marion College. She will conduct the preconvention school, which will open.the convention at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday. She will also be guest speaker at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Tuesday evening, 7 p.m., will be “Youth Night” when young people of the Youth Temperance Council will present a program and receive annual awards under direction of Sarah Ward of Knightstown, executive director oftheYTC. Wednesday’s session will open at 9 a.m. and will include the memorial service. State officers and directors will speak and give reports followed by Mrs. Kissling’s address.

Webb was honored for being a top Bayliner dealer and having ordered more than $1 million worth of pleasure boats in 1986. Bayliner introduced 20 new models for 1987 to dealers representing 30 nations at the meeting which was held at The Abbey Resort on Lake Geneva, Wis., for the second year. Orders placed by dealers were up 40 percent over last year continuing the record pace that has made Bayliner the largest boat building in the world. Sales for the 1986 model year were about S3BO million, an all-time high for the firm. Bayliner manufacturers 40 boats from 14 to 45 feet in 14 plants throughout the United States.

Wednesday afternoon will open at 1 p.m. with a white ribbon dedication service for small children, a women’s medal speech contest, and state directors speaking. At 5:30 p.m., the convention dinner will be served and a patriotic program given honoring the centennial of The Statue of Liberty. Wednesday night, 7 p.m., “President’s Night” will be observed when the state president, Mrs. James Shelley, will deliver her annual address entitled, “Endued With Power.” At the close of the program, Mrs. Cleo Parrish will show slides of the Philippines where she attended the World WCTU Convention in February. Thursday morning will be devoted to election of officers, business, and reports with adjournment at noon. All sessions are open to the public.
