Kennedys move from the 'top of the world'
By MARK HUFFMAN Staff Writer While most people never experience the feeling of being ‘on top of the world, ” the Kennedy family of Syracuse was there for four years. Driving for 12 days from Lafayette before reaching such status, Bob and Jean Kennedy took a loaded car and another vehicle in-tow to Anchorage, Alaska; returning to the 40th latitude four harsh winters later with two daughters, Rebekah, one, and Sarah, three, in the back seat of a Volkswagen.

NJean was interested in the adventure of it, while I thought it would be a good place to work for awhile,” Bob said, referring to his job on the northern slope's pipeline. Originally intending to work in forestry, the graduate of the University of Idaho soon found that the jobs “just weren’t there” and agreed with his brother-in-law s suggestion that he venture to Prudhoe Bay. where the pipeline is located. “The adjustment (to Alaska) was mainly psychological,” Bill said, noting that time away from the lower states also meant time away from “normal” living standards. “I got tired of the summers, but Bob liked them.” Jean said, referring to the 19 hours of daylight each day of summer. However, the winters helped the Kennedys make up for any lost sleep, with five hours of daylight during December and January days. The rest of Alaska's oddities left little room for complaints, with the couple enjoying the beauty and vastness of the state. “It wasn't uncommon to wake up and find moose standing in the back yard,” Bob said, although, he added, “There are also a lot of misconceptions about the state — Anchorage is just like any other large U.S. city."

REMINISCING — Members of the Kennedy clan reminisce about their days in Alaska. (Photo by Mark Huffman) However, he admits that “when you leave Anchorage you really enter Alaska.” It didn't take Bob long to find that out after taking his inaugural airplane ride to his job site 900 miles away. “We would work 12 hour shifts for two straight weeks and then get two weeks off,” he said, realizing that two weeks of sub-zero weather would take a toll on the pipeline workers. “The coldest it got was about 58 degrees below zero, with a windchill factor of 110 below," he added. “He’d come home and comment about how nice the weather was while I’d be all bundled up,” Jean laughed. The Griffith native grew used 1 to the cold weather and frequent trips, after snapping “numerous" photographs of Mt. McKinley on his first voyage to Prudhoe Bay. "It was strange, there
keep out of the disagreement. To begin with it is one's word against another’s and people can see the same things in a very different manner. It is only human nature for people to try and emphasize the rudeness of others and the reasonableness of themselves. We always tend to minimize our shortcomings and magnify those of others. The same remakrs can be made but said in a different manner. The tone can imply whether an insult or fun is intended.
are thousands of people who wait for years to see that mountain and here we were fly ing over it every two weeks,” he mused, adding, “It was also awesome when you look at where we were while on the pipeline — the Arctic Ocean.'’ Distance Takes Toll The distance soon took its toll, with the couple deciding to relocate to their home state after their daughters were born. “We wanted to raise our kids where they could be close to their grandparents, while having Bob gone for two weeks at a time was also hard on them — Sarah thought he lived at the airport,” Jean explained of the move that led to Syracuse. Taking to the warmer weather, Bob found a job with the Pacific Molasses Co. while Jean spends much of her time operating Anchor Inn Bed & Breakfast, which is also home to the Kennedy family “We kind of ‘fell into' the bed and breakfast business,” Jean admits, adding, “We liked the inside of the house as soon as we saw it and had heard the former owner had considered going into the business.” Employing the help of her brother, the house was renovated to include three bedrooms for guests and opened in July. “Business during the weekends has been pretty good, but it’s kind of slow during the week,” Bob says, adding, “We got a late start. ” The duo enhanced their business aptitude while in the frozen North. “Jean was always good at sewing so when we were in Alaska she made baby bibs and sold them to tourists,” Bill said, noting that the venture changed his opinion about the business world. “I used to think that it took a lot of sophistication or money to get into business, but there’s really not much to it.” Jean also has visions of entering the professional ranks from which she left after raising her two daughters. “I was a neo-natal nurse before coming to Syracuse, ” she said. A graduate of the University of Evansville and Purdue University, Jean also taught nursing classes at Purdue before making the move to Alaska. A talented duo, the Kennedys are likely to succeed in any capacity, especially when one considers they’ve already been “on top of the world.”
But never get involved in a row between two friends. They may get over it later on and resent you for taking a hand in the matter.
