Adult education, try it, you'll like it

In a slump 9 Tired of the same routine 9 Having trouble meeting new people? Have a desire to do something creative? Adult education is for you! Adult education can open the doors of opportunity for everyone. With the variety of classes offered by Wawasee Area Vocational Cooperative, there is something for everyone. The classes include: hobbies, business, trade skills, and recreation. For a “fun” way to get some exercise, why not try aerobics, ballroom dancing, volleyball or basketball? The recreation classes offer the opportunity to improve physical fitness while enlarging the social circle. Many people, who workm and out of the home, have added some variety to their routine through the hobby classes. Beautiful projects can be made while also reducing daily stress. New skills in quilting or painting will be taught. The business classes are popular, as they have helped many people gain the confidence and skills to re-enter the work force. Secretaries can increase their job skills with the word processing class. The_ computer classes are a “hit” with all age groups. Since we live in the computer age, it is important for all of us to become computer literate. For those who may think they missed their chance, it’s never too late to get a high school equivalency diploma. There will be free GED preparatory classes Seminary rates reduced Grace Theological Seminary in Winona Lake has changed its tuition policy to offer full-time Christian workers in the region the chance to audit seminary classes at a reduced tuition rate “Full-time Christian workers who are not regular students at the seminary qualify for the special tuition rate for auditing seminary classes,” announced Dr. E. Community forums set at Goshen

Goshen General Hospital is sponsoring five Community Forums on current topics in medicine. The first is “Just Casing: Justice. Health Care, and the Good Society.” The keynote address by Leßoy Walters, Ph. D , will introduce the fall sessions by outlining the competing conceptions of justice that are shaping public policies regarding health care. Dr. Walters is the director of the Center for Bioethics at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics. A nationally recognized expert in bioethics, he is also co-editor of “Contemporary Issues in Bioethics,” and editor of the annual “Bibliography of Bioethics.” Dr Walters teaches in the philosophy department at Georgetown University. Dr Walters is a Goshen College graduate The public is invited and encouraged to attend this session on September 11, at Umble Auditorium, Goshen College, beginning at 7 p.m. Some very basic questions about choices in health care will be addressed, such as the Lori Tull case. The 12-year-old girl from Pontiac. 11l needed a heart transplant, but her parents could not afford the $200,000 cost. Should that automatically exclude Lori from the list of transplant candidates 9 When 21-year-old Karen Ann Quinlan lapsed into a permanent coma ten years ago, her parents had to decide and fight for the right to disconnect the artificial life support system. There are 10,000 individuals in a permanent comatose state today, just as Karen Ann Quinlan was, and their care costs about $1.5 billion a year f Then there are choices concerning expensive “experimental” therapies that may save or prolong life. A current example is autologous marrow transplantation (AMT), an adjunct treatment that makes very high dosage chemotherapy for certain forms of cancer possible — types that had usually been fatal in the past. AMT costs SIOO,OOO per pa-

For anyone who wants to learn a trade skill, the basic skill classes are available. The classes include welding, upholstery, and woodshop. The student has “hands on” experience by using the shop equipment. There will be well-trained and experienced instructors in these classes. The adult education program changes to fit the community needs. Each term there will be new classes. As enrollments change, the program is readjusted. Suggestions for new or different classes are always welcome! Why not give adult education a try 9 For more information call: Wawasee Area Vocational Office, 457-3147. ext. 202. 8 a.m. -3 p.m.

Split vote tables rezoning of land in Scott township

The petition of Gordon McCormick to rezone 40 acres in Scott Township south of Nappanee from agricultural to residential use again attracted over 40 remonstrators to the Kosciusko County Area Plan Commission meeting in Warsaw last week. Most of those who stood as being against the petition appeared to be of the Amish community as, board members considered concerns about the petition which included area traffic safety, dramage and proximity to hog and cattle feeding operations. McCormick had previously had his petition to have the area zoned for heavy industry denied by the APC board with a similar audience in attendance. He withdrew that petition before it was considered by the county commissioners Vic Virgil, Kosciusko County Extension Agent, confirmed that the county ordinance defines a confined livestock feeding operation as being over 600 head of hogs or 300 head of cattle. This was after Rod Burkholder pointed but the location of his

Neighbors oppose mobile home placement

The Kosciusko County Board of Zoning Appeals reached a split decision on two petitions at its meeting Monday in the Justice Building in Wfirsaw. Jack Michael had petitioned for a variance which would permit the placement of a single family residence 'mobile home) 10 feet off a road right-of-way. A second petition asked for placement of a 1 mobile residence 16 feet from the water Tom Wigent, Ligonier attorney represented the Michaels and submitted photos of'improvements made to the appearance of their lake property. He said axles of the residence would be removed to lower the structure and allow final skirting. Warsaw attorney Milo Lightfoot, spoke for Mr. and Mrs. Martin Galloway and David Case represented other remonstrators for attorney Steve Snyder. feeding operation, with up to 300 head of hogs and 50 head of cattle. After all arguments were heard, the public meeting portion was closed and Steve Butt moved to not recommend the petition to the commissioners due to the presence of the hog operation, traffic concerns and the fact that growth south from Nappanee is not a valid concern of the APC. A split vote of four in favor and three against forced the tabling to next meeting when a full board may be present and the required five votes in favor may be present. Other Cases The board voted to recommend rezoning 3.0528 acres of land on the south side of the Milford/Syracuse Road and 208 feet west of CR .300E in Van Buren Township from agricultural to residential district. Jerry Lessig, engineer, presented the petition for Leainon and others. The board voted unanimously to approve the petition of Chester Gore to rezone five acres from agricultural to residential use

the area, the board voted to deny the 10-foot from roadway variance, but approved the petition for 16 feet from the water. The remonstrators left in a quandary as to what would happen next. The continuance case of Paul and Helen Lecount to permit placement of a single family residence and garage 13 inches from a property line and 3 feet 4 inches from the opposite property line was continued another month since no one was present to represent the LeCounts. Since the house is already built the board may get an injunction to have it moved and assess noncompliance penalties if applicable.

The property is located on the east side of CR 175E and 900 feet north of CR 75N in Wayne Township. Ernest Lee and Carol Ann Mason were successful in their petition to rezone four lots from a public use district to a residential district as the board voted to recommend the change to the Town of Pierceton, in which the property is located. Remonstrators were present to speak against the petition of Art Gakstatter to rezone five lots, in two parcels, from residential to commercial use. His plan was to build “U-lock-it” type storage buildings in Pierceton. Some board members felt Gakstatter had a good idea but was trying to put the storage units in the wrong place. The petition was denied based on incompatibility with the surrounding area. Ed Snyder, Claypool, presented his case to the APC relative to his being fined for non-compliance over several months in removing various items including a former trailer from his property In view of some possible extenuating circumstances in the case the board voted to only order him to pay the court cost and attorney fees which had been expended in the action against him and waive the additional fine which had been levied by the court. This action was contingent on his removal of the last trailer unit by September 20 and pledge to keep his property neat and orderly The continuance of the Don Roop petition and the Earl Buck and Fred O. It will make it interesting, ’ ’ he replied. Despite the fact Walker wiU be attending French colleges, he has an advantage over the high school foreign exchange students, who lose a year of schooling in the program. While attending college in Cannes and Sorbonne he will be given college credit and his grade point average will remain the same. Walker commented the grades he receives while in France will not be transferred to Wabash, all he’s required to do is pass his classes. “It gives me a chance to go out and see the world, ” he said jokingly adding he doesn't have to work as hard. His enrollment to Cannes and Sorbonne was through Wabash College and AIFS. His costs, which total $9,500 for both semesters, are being paid for by Wabash College. Wabash will also be paying Walker the difference of what it would cost him if he had studied at Wabash that year on top of the SI,OOO study grant.-
