Property owners take care of lakes
There is more to enjoying the lakes. Those who live on or by lakes must maintain them as well. The Barbee Chain Lakes must be in good hands since they are cared for by the Barbee Property Owners’ Association. Therefore, separate programs are set up by the board of directors. They include water quality control, weed control, water patrol and fish stocking. These are necessary tasks for upkeep. Shorelines of the lakes are often sprayed to stop excessive weed growth as well as maintain lakefront property.

differentrole in recent years. According to Edna Lawson, a longtime member, the club focuses on money making projects such as ice cream socials, fishing contests and craft shows. Funds raised from these events, and others, help pay for the maintenance of the conservation building as well as support several civic groups. Civic groups that benefit from the projects include the North Webster EMS and the North Webster Fire Department. The club also promotes conservation activities by sponsoring chosen individuals who attend conservation camps. These individuals are between 12 and 16 years of age. Lawson added/ that the conservation building can serve as an emergency shelter in case of weather disasters, such as floods, snow storms and tornadoes.

"Guys and Dolls' is pick of the crop
By BILL SPI KGEON Guest Writer Balanced almost perfectly between poignancy and irreverence. Guys and Dolls" is. in this reviewer’s opinion, the pick of the crop this year at the Enchanted Hills Playhouse. You know the story: it’s based on Damon Runyan's characters along and about Broadway a few years (make that decades' ago: Nathan Detroit. Sky Masterson, Incentive sales DETROIT — The nation’s leading automakers reported a 2.4 percent gain in July car sales from year-ago levels and said thew will continue incentive programs through the end of the 1986-model year

HHHI fl! IS W j & ' r 1 J i SBBfeSmv A . g BAREFOOT IN THE PARK — Enchanted Hills Playhouse, with the support of the Indiana Arts Commission and the National Endowment For The Arts, will close its 1986 season with the Neil Simon comedy “Barefoot In The Park.’* Quoted as “a bubbling, ribtickling comedy” and as “absolutely tops in fun,” this show is perfect for the entire family,. After a six-day honeymoon a spanking new lawyer, who has just won his first case (six cents in damages), and his young bride move into the new, high-rent apartment that she has chosen for them. But the difficulty is. in order to enjoy the charming character of this apartment, one has to climb six wheezing flights to get to it. , And not only that, but the apartment is absolutely bare of furniture, the paint job came out all wrong, the skylight leaks snow, there isn’t room for a double bed, and an outlandish gourmet who lives in a loft on the roof usesit and the window ledge as the only access to his padlocked premises. The situation is enough to break the hear of the young, stylish lawyer ; and indeed it does, on the night he flatly refuses to join his wife for a barefoot stroll in the snowy park. She kicks him out, but he comes back — not for reconciliation, but because he figures that since he’s paying the rent she should be the one that goes. % , Enchanted Hills Playhouse features Barbara Watschke as Corie and Paul Gregory Nelson as Paul Bratter. Watschke and Nelson played opposite one another in “The Rainmaker," and together again, promise to make the last show of the 1986 season a wonderful finale. “Barefoot In The Park” will run August 27-31 at Enchanted Hills Playhouse. may be obtained by writing: Enchanted Hills Playhouse. PO Box -tt, Syracuse, Ind., 46567. Season tickets for the 1987 season are also on sale at the box office.
Nicely-Nicely Johnson and others of that ilk. Into the lives of these guys come some dolls. Actually, Nathan has been engaged to Adelaide for 14 years, and her mother back in Rhode Island thinks they are married and have five kids. And Sky picks up his doll as part of a wager: he bets he can get an attractive Salvation Army-type to fly with him to Cuba for the evening Need I remind that these people are all characters, perhaps even with a capital “€*?’ ” And spending a couple of hours with these characters as they are played by the talented Enchanted Hills company is fun. If the gags seem a little old, well, they are. But they still get laughs. And there is not a pinch of profanity or vulgarity to offend, in the process. The music is familiar, and as presented it greatly adds to the evening’s enjoyment. As much a part of ‘Guys and Dolls ” as Jo Swerling’s and Abe Burrow's book are Frank Loesser’s music and lyrics, durable then and just as durable now. When Jennifer Joy and Paul Gregory Nelson, playing Sgt.
Sarah Brown and Sky Masterson, sing T’H Know, ’’ little nodules of ice are apt to develop on listener’s spines. Miss Joy is also a treat to hear singing “If I Were a Bell,’’ and, jointly with Nelson, ‘•‘•l’ve Never Been in Love Before. ” He, in turn, has an effective solo number in “My Time of Day.” an ode to pre-dawn Manhattan. This reviewer would go see “Guys and Dolls'just to hear whomever is playing Arvide Abernathy sing “More I Cannot Wish You,” and Scott K. Strode, playing Arvide in the current production, is no disappointment in this department As the impatient Miss Adelaide, Sadly Jo Bannow is a delight, singing “A Bushel and a Peck’’ and “Take Back Your Mink’ ’ with the dancing dolls, and capably handling "Adelaide’s Lament” solo. Add to the above numbers “Luck Be a Lady” and “Sit Down, You’re Rockin' the Boat,” and you can see why “Guys and Dollswas a hit when it first played Broadway and continues to be a hit more than a generation later. Jeff Talbott does a heads-up job as Nathan Detroit, who can’t find a permanent (or even temporary) home for his crap game. Jerry o’Boyle is pleasantly con-
sistent as Nicely-Nicely Johnson, his stage presence is bit reminiscent of former Enchanted Hills producer Douglas Stark. The thing that impressed me most about the current Enchanted Hills version of “Guys and Dolls” beyond the effective handling of the music was the suitably of each and every cast member for the role or roles assigned; there wasn't a mismatched in the lot. As has been the case all summer, Jeffrey Koep’s direction is on target, and C. Duane’s Skoog’s set is most effective A special bouquet goes to costume designer LuCinda L. Lounge for this one, too. I suspect the temptation would be great to overdo in costuming people created by Damon Runyan, and Miss Lounge zeroed in with authenticity and rightfully resisted anything that could be termed bizarre Richard Biever and his offstage musicians again play well, with adequate volume, and with an understanding of the nuances of the score, assisted as necessary by the various onstage members of The Mission Band. ( ‘ ‘Guys and Dolls' ’ is Enchanted Hills’ final musical this season. It runs through Sunday night It's worth rearranging your dinner hour or whatever else you usually do at mid-evening to take it in. On textile deal United States trade negotiators accepted a five-year interna tionaJ fiber agreement which they predicted would help the domestic textile and apparel industries compete “more fairly” on the world market But textile state lawmakers immediately attacked the agreement, calling it a “sellouta “disaster ” and a ”eave-m" to pressure from Third World exporters
