A fascinating book

By DORIS MCMANIS CAMDEN ‘‘American Ancestors and Cousins of The Princess of Wales,” by Gary Boyd Roberts & William Addams Reitwiesner is a fascinating book for genealogists and can be interesting for nongenealogists. At first glance, it appears to be dry reading and without much narrative. Neither is true. The children of the Prince of Wales and Princess Diana are one-sixteenth American. The Princess's maternal grandfather, the 4th Baron Fermoy. graduated from St. Paul's School in Concord, N. H. and Harvard and lived in the United States until his father’s death in 1920. He served in World War I as an American Army captain in France. He was the eldest male offspring of an Irish Lord’s second son and the daughter of an American millionaire. Some of this family lived as close to us at Chillicothe. Ohio. Much of the book is genealogical listings, and the index is a complete one. The book, published in 1984, contains 194 pages. It is amazing how many Americans of fame are part of Princess Di s family. "Why not me?” brought an answer from Alice McDowell of Warsaw. My ancestors were here, many of them, in preRevolutionary days. Alice has worked on much New England genealogy. She stated that the early settlers of that area and in early times now have so many descendents, and if one also had ancestors there at that time, the two might be actual relatives or at least have “connections.” Alice’s mother was a sixth cousin of Winston Churchill, and Alice may have connections — not actual relatives, but in-laws, etc. — with President Richard Nixon and Johnny Carson. Alice’s husband, Ron, was related to Benjamin Franklin, and he was connected to Daniel Boone and Abraham Lincoln. The connections can t be claimed as ancestors, but it is interesting. The same situations are true of Princess Diana. The book can be obtained on inter-library loan through the Warsaw Library, at no cost, if you are a patron of the library.

A quick check of the A s in the index reveals that Princess Di s family had ancestors or connections with Abigail Adams, John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Shirley Temple Agar, Louisa May Alcott, Priscilla Alden, Horatio Alger, Jr., Susan B Anthony, the Astor family, & the Auchincloss family. The best I have found, in my own searching, is that my father s sister's husband was a distant cousin of Herbert Hoover, and there is a possibility of a connection with Samuel Clemens otherwise known as Mark Twain.
