Grays claim diving medals at Games

Matt and Chris (Wyss) Gray recently competed in the White River Park State Games at Indianapolis. Matt had a tremendous outing at the state level as he won a gold medal in the one-meter dive; a silver medal in the platform dive; and a bronze in the threemeter dive. Chris brought home a silver medal in the one-meter event. In addition. Matt is the son of Col. Joe and Joan Gray of Syracuse (Lake Wawasee). MAXWELTON The Maxwelton Ladies played “Best Poker Hand’’ on Wednesday, Aug. 6. Nine-hole winners were: June Lantz, first place; and Marge Yoder, second place. Winners in the 18-hole bracket were: Mary Brannum and Jo Butler, tied for first place; Darlene Mathew, second place; and Delight Craig, third place. Nine-hole winners from the Ladies’ Handicap Tournament were: June Lantz, first place; and Betty Slabaugh, runner-up. The Lake Tippecanoe Sailing Club continue its season with another race on Aug. 3. Leesburg’s Bill Allen won the Small Class, sailing a Hobie T 4. Phil Jung, of Converse, finished second in a Super Porpoise while Geo Mann, Leesburg, placed third with a Venture ’ls. Leesburg’s’s Mick Case won the Open Class. He sailed a Rhodes 19, of which Nick Allen, also of Leesburg, was crew. Tony and Beth Jeffers, of Fort Wayne, claimed second in a Tanzer ’16.. Finishing third was Vic Seright, of Leesburg, who was captain of a Buccaneer 240. Al Hayes, also of Leesburg, was crew.

A 1974 graduate of Wawasee High School, Matt earned his college degree from Ball State University in 1979. He was a member of the diving team there. Chris graduated from Paul Harding High School in Fort Wayne, and later attended Ball State. She was a member of the swimming and gymnastics teams and earned her degree in 1979.

In the Hobie ’l6 Class, Howard Johnson sailed to victory. The Leesburg native was aided by Debbie Archer of LaGrange, 111. Mishawaka’s Will Shroyer, along with son Bart Shroyer, finished second while Mike Hearn, of Warsaw. with father Jim Hearn, placed third. The next race is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 17. The skipper’s meeting will be at 11 a.m. at Patona Bay and the races will begin at 12:30 p.m. Trophies will be awarded at 4:30 p.m. at Patona Bay.
