A LOOK AT THE YOUTH CENTER — Christa Francis, director of the Lakeland Youth Center, spoke to the Wawasee Kiwanis on August» describing the programs and proposed new programs. Coming to the center last March, she continued the present programs and began looking at needs for new programs. One of her goals is to promote the counseling aspect in the center’s programs. She sees herself as the primary person to get information to the community, ft is no easy task to sell services. In addition to continuing present programs she is working on the organization of soccer teams for which she needs coaches. Classes in gymnastics are to be promoted. Another teen program is to be organized known as “Teen Time.” Francis sees the need to develop skills for teenagers and get the teenagers out into the community using those skills. She plans to begin this program with junior high youth. The program will include bringing persons from various fields to share with the youth as they consider what to do with their lives. A number of activities will be provided for youth. Dances for youth will probably be conducted monthly. She would like to open up the building after school for activities. She plans to attend a workshop in Fort Wayne to receive information and suggestions for programs at the center. In the photo. Francis appears with Robert Sloop, president of the Wawasee Kiwanis Club.
