It happened...in Milford

10 YEARS AGO. AVGUST 4. 1976 Greg Weisser. son of Mr and Mrs. Fred Weisser of Milford, and Pat Speicher, son of Mr. and Mrs. Pat Speicher of Milford, combined to throw a no-hitter as the Milford Youth League travel team defeated Mentone, 5-0. The duo struck out 17 batters as the Milford team completed an undefeated regular season after winning the Land of Lakes Youth League tournament. Warsaw artist Brad Butler is completing a large 15 by 40 foot mural on the side of the Walter Drug Co. building in Milford, depicting the classic fight between the USS Bonhomme Richard and the HMS Serapis, on September 23, 1779, in which the 1 famous American admiral supposedly said, T have not yet begun to fight.” Butler is doing the painting from a full watercolor by Edward Tufnell. The painting on the drug store building has been a point of curiosity for motorists and pedestrians alike Kris Golden of Milford won the outstanding female skier award and was first overall when members of the Water Ski, Inc., were hosts for the Rolli Williams Memorial state championship tournament held at Nellans Lake near Warsaw last weekend. Kris was first in girls’ jump, first in girls’ tricks and second in girls’ slalom. 10 YEARS AGO, AUGUST 11. 1970 Residents of northern Kosciusko County will have an opportunity to meet with Congressman Floyd Fithian Saturday during a town meeting in Milford. The second district representative has scheduled the session from 9-10 a m. in the Milford Fire Station. Residents of Leesburg, Syracuse and North Webster have also been invited. Bob Seney of Renton, Wash., and his two horses, trooper and Tramp, rode down Milford’s Main Street at 8:50 this morning as part of his 18,000 miles of - horse-riding travels which have taken him through 48 of the 50 states. After feeding his horses at the Farm Bureau and riding down Main Street, Seney left

Milford on Emeline Street, headed for Arizona, where his trip of 35 states began in March, 1975. Mr. and Mrs. John L. Miller and daughters Shah and Sheli of Dewart Lake and Renee Anglin of Milford spent the week at Tivoli Gardens near Brighton, Mich., where they attended the 1976 Midwest Regional Water Ski championships. The Millers served as judges for the three days of competition. Elmer and Phyllis Sorenson of Milford will culminate a quarter century of marhage this Thursday. Aug. 12. They were married on a Sunday in 1951 in the backyard of Mrs. Sorenson’s house. 20 YE ARS AGO. AUGUST 3. 1906 Milford Town Board members Darrell Orn and Bill Speicher approved hiring of Gary Ringler of Syracues as a lifeguard at the town beach on Waubee Lake during their meeting Monday. Member Speicher made a motion that the Milford Lions Club be given permission to pay the lifeguard from their funds and the approval was given. Jean Kaiser of Mlford has been named a counselor for the Indiana University YMCA and YWCA sponsored freshman camp next September 11-13. The camp program is designed to orient new students for academic and social life, as well as introduction to campus traditions. Linda Kesler, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Domi Kesler of Milford, received the “Actress of the Week” award at an awards brunch held recently at the Indiana University campus. Members of the Milford Lions Club voted Monday to spend $450 on football equipment for the program to start in the Lakeland Schools this fall. The equipment is to be purchased by the club and given to the Milford School.

20 YEARS AGO, AUGUST 10, 1966 A parade is set to kickoff the annual Milford Festival on Tuesday. Aug. 22. In the parade will be last year’s Fall Festival Queen, Judy Dippon, and her court. Chamber of Commerce, and the 1966 queen candidates. Many city organizations have entered the parade, as well as several from outside the area. Under the direction of Richard Anderson, the chorus of the Ancil Geiger unit 226 American Legion Auxiliary of Milford placed first with a high rating of 274 in the state competition held over the weekend at South Bend. The TriTone trio placed first with an excellent rating of 291. Both groups were accompanied by Mrs. Fred Weisser. Tracy Barnes of Chester, S.C., landed his large hot-air balloon in a wheat field on the Chester Felkner farm just south of Milford Tuesday morning. The pilot stated he came down to

Barnes left San Diego, Calif., on April 9in an attempt to make the first coast-to coast balloon flight. He hopes to reach the east coast by the end of the month. 30 YEARS AGO, AUGUST 9, 1956 The Milford High School Band will play at the Kosciusko County Fair Friday afternoon and evening. They will replace the Atwood Band, which is unable to play, and will play at the same time and place as their schedule on Wednesday. At the meeting of the Milford Fire Department last week, the decision was made to have the fourth annual chicken barbecue dinner Sunday, October 7. This will be held at the Community Building. Johnnie Fisher came to Milford Tuesday morning with a pick-up load of tomatoes, the first to come into the Campbell Soup Co docks at Milford. Mr Fisher said the tomatoes were the “best I have ever seen in five years. ” The annual Ruch reunion was held at Waubee Lake shelter house Sunday. There were 50 people present to enjoy the basket dinner served at noon. The Milford Lions Club held a short meeting at the Melody Case Monday and voted to purchase either hogs or a steer at the 4-H sale at the county fair.

3» YEARS AGO. AUGUST IS, 19M Many of the Milford Bachelors 4-H Club completed their work for this year when they exhibited at the county fair in Warsaw last week. Although the boys and girls from the Milford club did not win any championship ribbons this year, they did receive their share of highplacings The Milford Lions Club purchased two 4-H Club pigs exhibited at the Kosciusko County Fair. One was a Berkshire, weighing 193 pounds, at 26 cents per pound, which belonged to Roger Hunsberger. The other was a Yorkshire, weighing 227 pounds at 27 cents per pound, which belonged to Bud Fisher Both boys live near Milford. The regular meeting of the American Legion was held Monday night at the Legion Hall. Commander Harry Dole Doty had charge of the meeting. A flag pole has been purchased and will be erected on the city pa"k on Main Street. Funds to purchase the pole were raised by a raffle held by the legionnaires last fall when they raffled off a shotgun and beagle pup. 50 YEARS AGO. AUGUSTO. 1936 Four young men possessing harmonious and well-trained voices, traveling as the Asbury Male Quartet, gave a most pleasing concert at the Milford Methodist Church Sunday morning. The young men will leave for

Scotland next month on the first day of an evangelical tour around the world which is scheduled to require 12 months time. The boys have the ability, personality and the voices needed to deliver an impressive gospel song service Garry and Jerry Graff, twins of Mr. and Mrs Albert Graff of Milford, expect to attend the fifth annual convention of the National Twins Association in Fort Wayne August 29 and 30. The Graff twins were prize winners in a former convention of this association. Investigation of chicken stealing in the Milford area has oc cupied Milford Sheriff Virgil Yeager for the past few weeks Irvin Pinkerton reports the theft of 18 chickens on Julv 22. The second application of a black top material was put on Milford Streets this week and was then coated with gravel. The materials were being spread with equipment from the county highway department.

AUGUST 13. 1936 Dr and Mrs V.G Hursey, Mrs M.D. Kelly and Charles Bower sox, all of Milford, arrived home Sunday evening from their Canadian fishing trip They caught plenty of nice walleyed pike Dr. Hursey proved to be the real fisherman of the group, and holds the honor of landing the largest fish.
