Community Corner
By MARK HUFFMAN Staff Writer Claiming that every time she hears the song “On the road again" she follows suit, Syracuse Police Department secretary Joan Freiheit is making what she anticipates as her last move when she returns to her hometown of Toledo, Ohio, this month, having never left an area without leaving a lasting impression. "We’re going to miss Joan, she’s a super person and was an excellent secretary.” stated Police Chief Robert Ziller, echoing what many have discovered after encountering the personable Ohioan. Profile Entering the Lakeland community in 1981, Freiheit became a member of the town’s elite when she signed on as a police and fire dispatcher in June of that year. "I was looking for a part-time job in the area, saw the opening in the newspaper and decided to apply — it was on a whim," she rerfiembered. That "whim" lasted for five years, with Freiheit experiencing "every situation imaginable. " One such situation is relived every time her cat jumps to her lap. “I was dispatching one day when a woman brought in a stray kitten and the telephone rang, I went to answer the call and the cat crawled under the radiator," Freiheit recalled, adding, "I tried and tried but couldn’t get that cat out and eventually had to call the fire chief, who had to remove the radiator from the whll."

Less humorous anecdotes also dot the former dispatcher’s career, with shaken callers often requiring a calm voice at the other end of the line. “You have to learn to remain cool and not be excitable on the phone,” Freiheit advised, adding, “It’s a job that requires a lot of common sense. ” ■T '-J* gH ’*’■ FAMILIAR POSE — Syracuse Police secretary Joan Freiheit strikes a familiar pose as she wraps up her duties at the typewriter this week. be true If he is, I am afraid that you will be building up unhappiness for yourself by such a marriage and I should not rush into it hastily if I were you. It may be that he is lonesome and unhappy and is turning to you on the rebound. Os course, there are cases where young people rush into marriage before they realize what it’s all about and are not happy until they separate. But you should be able to judge your young man’s feelings by the way he behaves and what he says Louisa Address: Louisa. Box 532. Orangeburg, SC 29115
Having worked as a billing clerk at Dana Corp, for six years and secretary for other various companies throughout the Midwest, Freiheit decided to pursue her real love in June, 1985, after she witnessed a “state of confusion” upon picking-up her paycheck at the police station. “I asked actingPolice Chief Joe Thornburg if they could use some help and two days later he called me to work parttime," she said. That part-time job turned into full-time in October of that same year after Ziller took over the head post. Responsible for typing reports, dealing with the public, and performing various clerical duties. Freiheit easily adapted to her new job and the badges surrounding her. “I became a sort of Mother Hen’ to the guys (policemen), making sure they appeared in court on time and filled out their offense reports,” she laughed, adding, “It was easy because everyone is so friendly.” Versatility also lent to the job, with Freiheit escorting female offenders to the county jail when called upon. "There were a lot of interesting and amusing incidents when I’d go with the police to the jail." she recalled. Disturbing incidents also occurred, with parties being a source of disappointment for Freiheit. "It really was sad to see underage drinking and drug abuse." she stated in a sobering tone, noting that she has a 21-year-old son of her own, who will be attending Indiana UniversityPurdue University at Fort Wayne in the fall. Claiming that secretarial work “gets in your blood.” Freiheit will attempt to land a job in the Buckeye State in that capacity. “It would be great if I could get into police secretarial work again, but this job will be hard to replace — the chief is very dedicated to police work and was such an easy man to work for because of his personality,” she said, looking around the room as she added, “We had a lot of laughs in here.” Some of those laughs may not be heard in a fewweeks. but they'll be remembered by the people who shared them.
