DOCTORf Most travelers wouldn’t set out on vacation with a camera designed fifty years ago. They certainly wouldn’t fly abroad in a plane built in the 1930’5. Yet the medication many pack is a bulky liquid, developed last century, which is a very slow remedy for upset stomachs. They’re right about the disease but wrong about the cure, as Your doctor can prescribe the medicines you’ll need to see you through a host < of travelers’ ailments. Travelers diarrhea is th most common problem facing Americans abroad and modern remedies can cure it in an hour with as little as one capsule. However, these new. efficient medicines aren’t available in stores — they have to be obtained on prescription through a physician. That may seem a chore, but it’s worth the time'to avoid being cooped Up in a foreign hotel room waiting for a day or more for the old over-the-counter remedies to work or for the disease to run its course. Among the most efficient of the new medicines is Imodium" I loperamide HCL i. There are many other reasons to visit your physician before going abroad. Modern medicine has answers for a whole array of diseases which may threaten your vacation—ranging from antihistamines for clogged ears to cream for insect bites. New vaccination techniques can protect you from a variety of’unpleasant —sometimes fatal—disorders. Your doctor’s advice is a valuable piece of travel insurance. He or she is the best source of guidance on what to avoid in the way of food and drink and staying healthy on your trip.
