JM JB FFA MEMBERS AT CONFERENCE — Debra Schafer and Kevin Grimm of the Wawasee FFA Chapter of Syracuse were attending the 1986 Washington Conference Program in our nation's capital. They are pictured here as they are greeted in Washington. D.C., by Rick Malir of Wilson. Kan., national president of the FFA organization. The week-long program helps FFA members improve leadership skills, develop an understanding of national heritage, and prepare for more effective leadership roles in their chapters and communities. Sessions on human relations, goal setting, and personal communications develop these skills. Personal outlook, motivation, and pride are also discussed. Visits to Mount Vernon, the Smithsonian Institute, Arlington National Cemetery, the Jefferson Memorial and other historic sights in Washington were included in the conference. A highlight of the week was a visit to the offices of Congressman John Patrick Hiler of La Porte and Senator Richard G. Lugar of Indianapolis. Proposed industrial park explained to council
Pat Watkins, Warsaw City Planner, was the guest speaker at the July 17 meeting of the Kosciusko County Lakes Council. Watkins explained the proposed 1,500-acre rezoning for an industrial park on U.S. 30 west of Warsaw. He stated that a minimaster plan would be developed for the site which would address transportation and minimize traffic impact. The plan would also address drainage, because a lot of low land which is not suitable for development and could be used for natural retention areas, also covered would be environmental concerns. Concerns addressed by members of the council included dumping and the proximity to the Tippecanoe River, toxic effluents and the effect on flooding due to runoff. It was also pointed out that certain areas included in the proposed site are not suitable for development because of soil types. Paul Steffen stated that four points regarding the site need to be addressed. First, that on-site water retention should be dictated, not merely suggested. Secondly, that there should be no development on the high ground above the heron rookery on the west side of the Tippecanoe River. Thirdly, that at least one environmentalist should be included on any committee to set standards for this type of development. Lastly, that the level of runoff must not exceed the present level. Jim Bohlin, council president, expressed concern over any addiConservation show planned The Roger Miller farm, northwest of North Webster, will be a beehive of activity on August 7 as a full day conservation tillage show, featuring a keynote talk byLieutenant Governor John Mutz, takes place.
