Papakeechie: Hidden by trees and hills
Tucked away behind the trees and hills south of Lake Wawasee is a small lake which provides all the comforts of lakeside living and all the pleasures and recreations that go along with lakes. The name of the lake is Papakeechie. but many people who live on the lake or visit the lake call it peaceful. The area covered by Papakeechie was originally six small lakes surrounded by marshland. In the 1800 s. the area must have looked much like the lakes area in the Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area. In 1910, an eight-foot earth dam was built in order to create one large lake out of the six smaller lakes. The project was finished around 1920. creating one large, useful lake. While most of the lake is relatively shallow, there are deep sections which are the remnants of the original six lakes. The name Papakeechie goes back to before the white man came to the area and the lakes were inhabited by the Indians. The great Miami Indian chief in the area in the 1830 s was Flat Belly. also known as Papakeechie. He was a large figure of a man. weighing more than 300 pounds with a bone through his nose. His lands covered most of the eastern section of Kosciusko County and extended into Noble County. When the government came to the area in the 1830 s. Papakeechie and his brother Wawasee negotiated for the Miamis. • Papakeechie was awarded the area now covered by Lake Wawasee and Papakeechie Lake.

The legend of Papakeechie says that the Miami Indians were sent west with the rest of the Indian population, but that Papakeechie and Wawasee escaped and came back to this area, eventually going to Michigan. Papakeechie is small in size as lakes in the area run. only a few hundred acres. But its seclusion and scenic bSauty are a draw to those who live or visit the lake. The trees shelter the lake from the wind, making it calm for pleasure boating, while the bigger lakes may be too choppy for boating. Its structure provides excellent fishing cover, also providing the perfect conditions for fishing, away from the active big lakes. The lake is unique also in that the residents "own” the lake. The lake was constructed for people to have a quiet, serene lake to live on. To preserve that idea, the early residents drew up specific rules that people living on the lake would be bound together in such away that they protect the beauty of the lake. When someone purchases land on the lake, he automatically becomes a part of the lake association, where on other lakes, membership in the association is optional. The care and concern for Papakeechie Lake is shown by the residents in their meetings to deal with matters of the lake. A drive around the lake demonstrates their success in preserving the ideas set up by the creators of the lake to keep Papakeechie peaceful, serene and beautiful lake with a character all its own.
