1954-1986: What a change
By ROBERT STUMP, A.C.S.W. Clinical Social Worker Is the world of today so much different that it was on August 1, 1954 ( 32 years ago)? The Korean war had wound down, people were looking forward to getting out of high school, college and the armed forces so as to make some waves in a “peaceable world”, v On August 1, 1986, people are looking forward to and doing about the same things except anger, hostility and problems of human inner control are more out in the open. Terrorism seems closer, sexual and physical abuse of kids and adults is out for view, countries are competing for more territory in the world and' people are manipulating others sometimes more skillfully and in more appropriate ways. Is it possible today that human beings are more sensitive to each other 9 Human beings might be moving in these positive directions. How many men who battered their wives in the year 1954 would have sought psychological and counseling services for themselves because of their inability to handle their anger in a stressful situation? Women batter too but not to the degree that men do. It is unlikely in 1954 they would have sought help except through excessive drinking to deaden their guilt or bragging to other male or female friends that .“you just got to let a woman or man know their place”. Men and women now know that when they batter a spouse because of poor temper control that: (1) spouse fettering is a crime, (2) battering is a learned behavior which is under the control of the person doing it and that alternatives to such violence can be learned, (3) battering is not a “mental illnesshowever a mental health system can help a batterer to learn constructive alternatives to violence, and (4) due to denial, blaming their behavior on others and impulsitivity persons who batter will either avoid or may fail to complete a voluntary treatment program. They have to be

mandated to undergo treatment by a court. It is also statistically correct to say that a person will batter again and again and again unless a person learns new ways of handling anger and frustration. Men and women do seem tow ant to stop their battering in 1986. How many sexually or physically abused children and teenagers nd their families went to a psychotherapist in 1954? The figures were not kept in any meaningful way. It was believed that this was something that was within the family and should be handled only within the family. In 1986 this is not handled in the family for several reasons: it is unhealthy, it causes those involved to feel inadequate, guilty, unclean and powerless, manipulated, and used, plus it is a crime toward another human being. In 1986 people who are abused and who abuse can now get psychological help in understanding themselves and others and can change their reactions and methods of living, learning and loving. In 1954 marital couples stayed together even though their relationship had no intimacy and they hurt each other by arguing dur-

ing most of their time together. They stayed together “for the kids”. It is different in 1986 as marital pairs can now determine their needs and goals and set up objectives. Today they may choose counseling for many reasons: (1) they are aware that family life is more more complex today with the majority of married couples both working, (2) persons recognize the importance of personal, emotional and mental confidence and good self-esteem before providing for another human being, including children, (3) marital partners know there is little likelihood that each of them is totally equal in a marital relationship but that learning to be flexible and caring can be the first ingredient of a growing marriage. There has been a lot of growth in human relationships in the last 32 years hasn’t there? Counseling can help in reaching personal goals or working through personal struggle. The rains of the last several days have been very beneficial to the farmers in the community. It will be of great benefit to the corn and soy beans, but it is a little late to help out the oats. Reports on oats that have been combined are that it is a fairly light crop, due to the lack of rain at the proper time. The corn is tassling out and shoots are showing, which means the season is passing swiftly. 50 YEARS AGO, JULY 2,1936 Just as soon as the Milford Girl Scouts are registered officially, a life-saving medal will be issued to
