BY PAUL SIEGFRIED Staff Writer Webster Lake may be the ’unknown" resort spot in the area, but residents and those who are familiar with the lake know of its beauty and versatility and are going to great lengths to take care of it. Webster is the third largest lake in the county and covers 585 acres It was originally seven smaller lakes, which now are the “deep holes" in the lake. The area was flooded in the 1800 s to form one lake for a mill built byThomas Boydston in 1848. It was originally known as Boydston s Lake. As a result of the flooding, most of Webster Lake is less than six feet deep, which contributes to the excellent fishing on the lake because of the shallow breeding areas and cover Chuck Lawrance, vice president of the Webster Lake Association, says. “On any given day. Webster Lake is probably the best fishing lake in the area, maybe the state.” Webster has produced many large bass, and is Kosciusko County’s only lake

containing pure-bred muskellunge According to Lawrance, the lake association has been in existence since the late 1920 s Currently. there are approximately 450 people out of a possible 800 lake property owners who are members of the association. They spend $16,000 per year of membership money for waterquality testing, weed-control and shoreline nuisance weeds and are a lobbying agent for Kosciusko County to the state Lawrance is concerned about the association and the lake, however. “It short-sided of them (lake property owners) not to participate in some way with the association. I’d like those people to be more involved in the lake association and the property association. It’s taken very much for granted. We don’t do these things because we have to. we do them because no one else will. We re assuming the responsibility. ” he says. Lawrance continues. “There are a lot of things we would like to do with the lake, but that takes a lot of money and manpower.
That’s inherent w ith the survival and security of the lake. There are not enough people interested in doing the things we want to do.”
