Observations on marital breakdown
By I.EN SMUCKER. Ph D Bowen Center Psychologist Implied in some marriage contracts (perhaps quite a few) is an unspoken pact or bargain. The wife pledges herself to be responsive to the emotional/physical needs of children and her husband in exchange for economic security and protection. The husband pledges himself to provide food, shelter, and protection in exchange for the domestic, emotional and sexual services of his wife Both are. to some extent, stereotyped products of a well oiled religio-cultural factory. The wife has been trained to look out for others; the husband to look out for himself On paper, the husband would probably say, “It looks like a reasonably good exchange” while the wife would probably say. “It looks less than satisfactory but I have to take what I can get.” Now the bargain may have "worked" in the past but it does not fit the two career marriage of the present. The rub comes when each partner demands more of the other than the original implied factory warranty. The wife not only wants her husband to provide economic security and protection (including auto care, yard work and general house maintenance) but also to relieve her of countless domestic chores and to give more time/attention to the children as well as other related family responsibilities ( family reunions, special holiday gatherings and social events). She would also like more participation in the promotion of family and religious values and rituals. She would like for her husband to be more appreciative of her. more sensitive, more understanding, caring and loving — in short, to "give her a break.” The husband not only wants his wife to provide the domestic and family services noted, but he would like to be relieved of feeling ultimately responsible for economic security and physical maintenance. Why can’t she con- s tribute more to car care; why does she continue to come to him with her problems, her insecurities; why can’t she be more self reliant, more self sufficient? In the process of playing out her role (in doing for others) the wife tends to lose herself — needing more support In the process of playing out his role, the

husband (in developing selfreliance. independence, power) loses others — the riches of a truly intimate relationship with wife and children. Each partner experiences increasing discontent with the other until a fairly dramatic event may occur such as an affair. physical abuse, excessive use of drugs or alcohol, separation or actually filing for divorce. This “event ” changes the focus of attention from dissatisfaction with the other to a crisis in the marriage itself. This may be the time when the couple seeks counseling — perhaps for quite different reasons. For example, if the wife has had an affair, the husband may now be willing to seek counseling (even though his wife may have pleaded with him before to do so) in order to save the marriage. Obtaining counseling maybe very difficult for the husband because this violates an important principle, namely, self reliance and solving one’s own problems. The wife may agree to Area bankers receive diplomas Several area bankers received American Institute of Banking diplomas and certificates at the annual Student Recognition Banquet. The South Bend chapter of AIB hosted the event at Century Center which honored those students who participated in banking courses as well as those who earned diplomas or certificates Jeanne Gardiner from State Bank of Syracuse was awarded a foundations of banking diploma. The American Institute of Banking is the largest educational division of the American Bankers Association, offering basic banking and functional skills programs at the local level through AIB chapters. Certificate programs are available, with certificates for customer service skills, securities services skills and supervisory skills. Diplomas are earned after completing from 18 to 25 credits and certificates require 12 to 14 hours for completion.
To participate on the state level a member must be 15 to 19 years of age within the current year. All awards are based on 4-H records compiled over the years. Each youth maintains his or her own Achievement Record Book, chronicling participation. I v 'jfl \ *- • fl Hit.,. .. TODD ROBERTS 4-H Plant/Soil Science Champion The record books are judged by the State Record Judging Committee, composed of three extension agents from each of the 10 extension areas in the state. This committee selects three to five members in each project area, and these selectees become the state “honor group.” One Hoosier champion is then named from the selectees in each project area. Records of each state achievement winner are entered in the national competition this fall, with most state winners receiving a trip to the National 4-H Congress in Chicago. The 4-H Congress this year is December 6-11.
counseling out of her concern for others, namely, sensing, (perhaps for the first time) her husband’s vulnerability, insecurity and previously undisclosed dependency on her. In other words, she may want to see that he will be cared for (which is again part of her role as caretaker) in the event that she proceeds with a divorce. If the marriage is to survive, it requires renewed commitment and the development of more effective communication and conflict resolution skills. If a decision for divorce has already been made, counseling can provide a means for working out the dissolution with as much integrity for all concerned as is possible. The Bowen Center offers counseling services for couples who are experiencing marital distress.
