Sisters take stand against violence
Over the Fourth of July weekend the Victory Noll Sisters in Huntington announced support of sanctuary for refugees fleeing violence in Central America and opposition to the death penalty. Speaking on behalf of the delegates gathered for the General Chapter of the Huntington-based missionary group, Sister Clarita Trujillo said, “We believe that these refugees are ‘political refugees’ and have a right to asylum in the United States.” She pointed out that the 1980 U.S. Refugee Act and the United Nations Protocol on Refugees, signed by the United States, affirm the obligation of our government to accept political refugees. Trujillo also noted that the sanctuary movement is deeply rooted in Scripture and Judeo-Christian tradi'tion. This is “timely and prophetic” action, observed Sister Mary Louise Rowney, president of the 280 member congregation of Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters. “It holds the inalienable

YOU’RE GOING TO RISE FROM THE DEAD! But tell me this! Since you believe what we preach, that Christ rose from the dead, why are some of you saying that dead people will never come back to life again? For if there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ must still be dead. And if He is still dead, then all our preaching is useless and your trust in God is empty, worthless, hopeless; And we apostles are all liars because we have said that God raised Christ from the grave, and of course that isn't true if the dead do not come back to life again. If they don’t, then Christ is still dead, And you are very foolish to keep on trusting God to save you, and you are still under condemnation for your sins; In that case all Christians who have died are lost! And if being a Christian is of value to us only now in this life, we are the most miserable of creatures. But the fact is that Christ did actually rise from the dead, and has become the first of millions who will come back to life again some day. Death came into the world because of what one man (Adam) did, and it is because of what this other man (Christ) has done that now there is the resurrection from the dead. Everyone dies because all of us are related to Adam, being members of his sinful race, and wherever there is sin. death results. But all who are related to Christ will rise again. Each, however, in his own turn: Christ rose first; then when Christ comes back, all His people will become alive again. After that the end will come when He will turn the kingdom over to God the Father, having put down all enemies of every kind. I Corinthians 15:12-24

rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness upon which our country was founded. ” “Our women,” Rowney pointed out, “are part of a growing number of committed citizens calling on our nation to uphold its heritage of welcoming those fleeing persecution.” Sister Margaret Betz, strong advocate of the stance against the death penalty, emphasized the urgency of this issue. “Right now,” Betz said, “The United States Senate is considering a bill which would permit the government to impose and carry out federal death sentences.” According to Betz, studies clearly show that, contrary to what many believe, the death

penalty does not deter crime. In fact, the states with the six lowest murder rates are states which have abolished the death penalty. “Because execution is irreversible and mistakes are sometimes made,” Betz continued, “It disturbs me very much that more than 1,500 persons in 39 states are languishing on death row at the present time.” In this action, Our Lady of Victory Missionary Sisters joins a broad coalition of national religions, civil rights and civil liberties organizations who actively oppose the death penalty on moral, religious and Constitutional grounds.
