Gardens keep many people busy during summertime
By PAUL SIEGFRIED Staff Writer Farmers spend countless hours tending to the “gardens” in order to provide for themselves and their families. While the average “backyard” gardeners do not usually rely on their gardens for a living, many spend the same number Os hours toiling on what to some is a hobby, and to others is an all-consuming passion. Gardens can take the form of a miniature farm, with the rows of corn, lettuce and other vegetables, while some grow various fruits, and some raise

spectacular flower beds. Many avid growers have a combination of all the different types. The reasons for having a garden are as varied as the different types of plants gardeners grow. Some do it to hedge against the cost of vegetables in the stores, while others enjoy the beauty of creating something. For many, it gives them a hobby, a chance to be outdoors and to be active. Julia Myers of Milford calls gardening “biological.” “Spring can’t come without seeing things growing, ’ ’ she says. Myers grows mostly herbs in

her garden, because she’s interested in them. Different herbs have different stories, different histories, and different uses. She says her garden is “oldfashioned,” because she doesn’t use anything new or hybrid in her garden. “The soil here is fabulous,” she says, “In fact, it’s too rich for some of the herbs. ’ ’ Every morning, Myers heads to the backyard. “I have my morning coffee in the garden,” she says, “I have to see what happened over night, what new plants are coming up. ” Lois Koher of Syracuse is also a gardener, but prefers flowers. “I
enjoy being out, ” she says, “I like to see the flowers. ” A member of the Syracuse Garden Club, Koher admits she doesn’t garden as much as she used to, but still enjoys gardening, especially roses, including one rose plant originally planted by her grandmother. But she is not the only member of the Koher family who is a gardener. “Maurice (her husband) has his small vegetable garden in back,” she says. In the Garden Club, according to Koher, the members study different flowers and herbs and have an annual plant exchange, which gives the members different plants to grow each year. The club also plants and arranges the flowers at Syracuse Park,

Joe and Margaret Ostendorf have been gardening most of their lives. “I used to run home after school and dig in the flower garden,” says Margaret, “both our parents used to garden back in Arkansas.” They moved to Milford in 1961, and recently moved south of town in 1984, where they have flower, herb, vegetable and fruit gardens on terraces cut into the hill along side their home, as well as a newly-created pond and 100 acres of land that they have someone farm for them. “Joe does most of the work in the vegetable garden and in the yard,” says Margaret, “He had to give it up when he was work-

The Ostendorfs grow'a lot of their own food and use many of the herbs in meals. “We like to taste what we grow,” says Joe, “We have the fruit trees, and we share a lot.” They grow a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, most of which they freeze to store. “I make freezer-jellies and jams,” says Margaret, “They're much better than in the store.' ’ The freezing of fruits and vegetables has a negative side, however. “We have two 22-foot freezers which are filled," says Joe. “ In addition to the gardening, Margaret makes various gifts and items for friends out of dried flowers, including hats, wreaths and floral displays.
