It happened . . .in Syracuse

10 YEARS AGO, JULY 7,1967 The weatherman proved a good friend to this year’s Lake Wawasee Flotilla effort as sunny skies prevailed all day Sunday. The Flotilla got off on schedule in front of the Eli Lilly property, with 29 entries, with commodore Ted Rogers leading a sparkling a flotilla of craft of a wide assortment as has ever been seen in the Big Lake. It was a fitting tribute to the nation’s 200th anniversary. Navy airman apprentice Paul F. Snyder, 19, son of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice R. Snyder of 118 W. Portland Street, Syracuse, has completed the basic avaition structural mechanic course at the naval air technical training center, Millington, Tenn. The Syracuse Camp Fire Girls will be donating all proceeds taken in during the sale of food at the city park concession stand on Thursday, July 8, to the Syracuse emergency unit fund for new equipment. Many thousands, according to some estimates, gathered at the fish hatchery on Lake Wawasee Saturday night to witness the fireworks put on annually by the Cromwell fire department. Over $3,000 was raised in door-to-door canvas of that section of the lake for the display. Mr. and Mrs. John L. Miller, Shari, Sheli, Shawana and Shantel of r 3 Syracuse spent the 4th of July week end in Indianapolis at the 500 Hydrodyne open water ski tournament at the Fairland recreation center. Mr. Miller was chief scorer and Mrs. Miller was assistant chief judge.

New procedure for truck registration

Many Indiana trucks, as well as some buses an some rental cars, used in interstate commerce will be subject to new registration procedures in 1987 as Indiana begins participation in the International Registration Plan (IRP). Any commercial truck will have to be registered under the IRP procedures if it has a registered gross weight of more than 26,000 pounds and regularly travels in more than one of the 35 IRP jurisdictions. Owners of trucks operated infrequently into other IRP states have the option of registering under IRP or ob-

It's always 1836 in Conner's Prairie, Ind.

By M. LYNN GRAY Guest Feature Writer It seems strange to see folks arriving at a crushing limestone parking lot in any form of vehicle, from van to car; beat-up truck to Lincoln Continental. The mode of transportation isn’t as unique as the people that get out of these modern means of conveyance, pie girls and ladies wear long, plaid or printed dresses with aprons, shawls and bonnets. The men and boys emerge in baggy pants of black, tan or gray, held up by suspenders. Long, puffed sleeve shirts of light color are worn. Some hats are in evidence and a few beards make an appearance now and then. This attire wouldn’t have caused a raised eyebrow in the Indiana of 1836, and it doesn’t cause any stir now, if you are visiting Conner’s Prairie Pioneer Village, where it is always 1836. Everything is calm and peaceful as the early-arriving visitor sits on, or leans against his car to await the opening of the 55-acre walking museum It’s nearly 10 a.m. and a car roars up the road and into the employee’s entrance. The two ticket-takers are running late this Saturday morning, but now the gates into Indiana’s past can swing open for the curious to observe and enjoy on a first-hand basis. Walking down a weed-bordered dirt lane, shaded by oaks, maples, and hickory, the visitor comes around the bend of the road to see a two-story structure of white clapboard. The cackle of chickens and the whinny of horses comes from the barn and the yard. Odors of freshly-baked bread and slow-simmering stew greet the newcomer as he steps Sunburn Sunburn can be painful. If you spend long hours at the lake or beach and get a sunburn you can ease the discomfort by adding 2 cups of baking soda to your bath water — and soak for a while. 4 BEDROOM MICK CHARMER 2 full baths, formal dining, fireplace, partially finished basement, on 1 % acres with barn. 29 YEARS AGO, JULY 8,1986 Father Eugene Zimmerman, pastor of the newly formed parish in Syracuse, announced the signing of a contract with Schumacher and Sons of Mishawaka for the building of a church on the parish site located three miles south of Syracuse on state highway 13. Work will be started about July 15 and completed in six calendar months, depending upon delivery of materials. Syracuse Lions served approximately 650 at their fish fry at the Scout cabin Friday night, according to Noble C. Blocker who had charge of ticket sales, he said money received from the fish fry goes toward the numerous local and state projects supported by the Syracuse Lions club. A Wittenberg university student from Syracuse has been named to the dean’s list for the second semester of the 1965-66 academic year. He is Michael Storms, son of Mr. and Mrs. D. Runge, r 2. The dean’s list honors fulltime students at Wittenberg who earn academic averages of 3.5 or better (4.0 is straight “A”). Mr. Storms earned a straight “A” average. Mr. and Mrs. Herman Jensen and daughter Kim of Garrett spent Tuesday afternoon and evening, June 28, with Mr. Jensen’s mother, Mrs. Ida Hibschman of Syracuse. The Jensens enjoyed swimming in Syracuse Lake and after enjoying a visit and supper with Mrs. Hibschman, all drove around the lakes.

taining trip permits for each trip into another IRP jurisdiction. IRP affects both for-hire trucking companies and private carriers. Under IRP, the registration fee on a truck will be a percentage of each state’s applicable fee based on the percentage of miles that fleet operates in each state. Among the other states participating in IRP are Illinois, Kentucky, and Michigan. Vehicles subject to registration under IRP will no longer be registered through local license branches. Instead, these vehicles will have to be registered through a new IRP office in the Indiana

He doesn’t spend much time in his lonely cabin and can often be found wandering the street of the small settlement, telling tales, swapping gossip or sampling a piece of Hannah McClure’s fresh apple pie. Doc Campbell and his wife, Harriet, are the society people of the village, and this is marked by the grand piano in the parlor of their large, well-appointed home. The visitor is treated to a rendition of “Turkey in the Straw” played by Harriet’s sister, visiting from Virginia. A small log structure draws the attention of the passerby, as voices are raised in unison, and waft through the open windows. Due to a lack of writing materials, the school is taught by the “Loud” method. On past the school house you come to the blacksmith shop, run by Ben Curtis, and further on, is located the shop of Isaac and Lucy Baker, the village potters. Conner’s Prairie was opened to the general public in 1974 as a part of an Eli Lily endowment. The pioneer village is locked in the 1836 time period and the inhabitants of the Hoosier “Brigadoon” act their parts to the extreme. William Conner, the earliest, permanent white settler in the “New Purchase” area, located on the White River and set up a trading post in 1802. He married a daughter of a Delaware Indian chief, and they had six children. When the Delaware reservation was relocated, Conner’s Indian wife and their children also left Indiana. William Conner met and married Elizabeth Chapman of New York. The industrious pioneer built the first brick house in 1823 in the “New Purchase” area. The Conner Mansion was the mail stop for Noblesville in 1823 and served as the Hamilton County Circuit Court from 1823-25. Although there was never a Conner’s Prairie in 1836, William Conner did help to establish the area towns of Noblesvile, Strawtown and Alexandria. The pioneer village is a composite of

While cities throughout this and neighboring states are experiencing mercury rises that cause suffering and discomfort thousands of persons along Northern Indiana’s lakes are enjoying the comfort of vacation land and taking advantage of the warm weather to swim, fish, boat and keep cool. In Chicago, temperatures have risen to 115 degrees while here in Syracuse mercury is reported reaching a maximum of 105. On Sunday, between 11:00 o'clock and sundown, a check-up on the number of cars that stopped at the State Fish Hatcheries at Lake Wawasee was made. highly authentic, deeply researched materials that make up a realistic village in the pioneer annals of Indiana history. The atmosphere, trades, people. hardships and happiness must have been much like this in early Indiana. North Webster, Syracuse and Milford, all incorporated in the 1830 s, must have shared much of the same daily lives that greet the inhabitants of Conner’s Prairie with each morning sun. If a weekend is available this summer, make the two hour trip to Noblesville and encounter your own Hoosier Heritage. Conner’s Prairie, operated by Earlham College, is an exceptional experience for the history buff, or someone with time on their hands and an inquisitive mind.
