MHA has guest speaker
The Mental Health Association in Kosciusko County held its monthly meeting at the Bowen Center on Wednesday, July 2. The meeting was highlighted by the fact that Paul Messplay, executive director of the Mental Health Association in Indiana, was the guest speaker. Messplay gave a brief history of the evolution of the associations over the past century. As it stands now, the Mental Health Association organization is composed of three tiers: the National Association; the state level and the local county chapters. Each has its function, but one common to all is that of patient advocacy with the legislature at all three levels. All associations are interrelated and the whole functions for the main purposes of improving attitudes toward mental illness and the mentally ill, im-
'Joseph' to be presented
Bethel College will present the original Broadway-style musical “Joseph”, based on the life of the Old Testament patriarch, in the auditorium of IUSB. Performances will be at 8 p.m. on July 18-19, and at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 20. First performed at Bethel College in March, 1985, the musical relates the story of Joseph from the time his brothers sell him into slavery until he becomes the second most powerful man in Egypt. The story focuses on the relationship between Joseph and his brothers and how he tests them and then offers them forgiveness and refuge in Egypt.
Doing more with less — Make a tackle box belt
By MARY B. BOWLING My husband’s favorite pastime is fishing. And like most serious anglers, he has a huge tackle box crammed full of doodads designed to outwit his finned opponents. But until recently, when bob fished on foot — meandering from spot to spot looking for “the big one” — his equipment was rarely within reach . . . because he’d left his clumsy tackle box sitting on a rock someplace. (In fact, he claims to have spent more time running up and down the edges of streams and lakes looking for his misplaced tackle box than he did fishing!) The Makings Only a few inexpensive items are needed to fabricate a tackle box belt, and many of them may already by lying around your home somewhere just waiting to be put to good use. The main ingredient, of course, is a belt. Preferably a cloth belt. (You could use leather, but it’s might hard to sew through.) You’ll also need a one-piece plastic soap dish (the kind with a hinged lid), about 18” of inch-wide elastic, a 12” length of rawhide thong or strong cord, a scrap of sheepskin (optional), a stout sewing needle, Smith-Waldridge hosts band concert A junior high band concert will be held Friday, July 11, at 2:30 p.m. at Smith-Walbridge Camp, Syracuse. proving services to the mentally ill, and to work for the prevention of mental illness and the promotion of mental health. One of the main points made by Messplay was the fact that these organizations depend on the support of volunteers. They are the lifeblood of success. This is true for the association in Kosciusko County as well. There is a need for volunteers to help at the dropin center at 207 E. Center Street in Warsaw. This location offers those who are recovering from mental problems a place where they may socialize with their peers and it provides a home-like atmosphere where they can relax. Anyone who wishes to volunteer for this service or any of the volunteer programs may contact the association at 269-2102.
“Joseph” is scheduled for fall publication by Bakers Plays of Boston, one of the largest publishers of plays. Although Bakers has already published many of Dr. Reimer’s religious plays, this will be their first publication of a musical-drama with the scope of “Joseph.” T/he musical score, written by Marshall Lawrence, includes the powerful “All My Days” and “Iron in My Soul.” Crowdpleasers include “Most Remarkable Man” and the humorous “Woman, She’s a Curse,” which is sung by the comic character Ymir. some sturdy thread, and several plastic 35mm film canisters. (If you don’t use 35mm film, ask your friends or the clerk at your local photo shop to save a few containers for you.) Plan before you sew. Consider which items you want to carry and where they should be placed for comfort and accessibility. (Naturally, if you’re making the belt for someone else, you should consult with that person about such things.) Hooks, sinkers, swivels, and small lures all fit nicely in the little cans. Flies can also be kept in the canisters — or hooked onto a scrap of sheepskin.

Lake Wawasee is the big-name lake around Syracuse, but the other two lakes near the town, Syracuse and Bonar, each are popular in their own way and have their own “personalities.” Syracuse Lake boasts one of the most popular swimming spots in the entire Lakeland area in Lakeside Park, and its recreational facilities are within easy walking distance of most of the

The Making Sew the elastic onto the belt in loops sized o hold the film cans snugly. Similar loops can be created to hold your variety fishing tools. (Bob keeps his hook disgorger handy this way.) Worms, crawfish, grasshoppers, and other live baits are stored in the plastic soap dish: Punch air holes in the lid with a red-hot ice pick, and suspend the dish from the belt by the thong or cord. Today, along North Shore Drive is a plaque at the site of Indian Hill, the place where the Indians would bury their dead.
