peals to masses and gets better with age. People who play it when they’re young continue doing so through their retirement years. Others learn to play golf later in life. The age of inception is limitless.
Also limitless are the men’s and women’s leagues. Golf clubs all over promote a competitive and social atmosphere. Many golfers find it hard to balance the two. That is golf. Some call it a sport. Others call it an art. Whatever its called, you don’t have to be in shape to play it. On The Course Its Monday morning, around 9 a.m. John Williams, a retired U.S. Air Force Colonel, arrives at the first tee with his friend, Erwin Schnedler, a retired Lutheran Minister. Both have homes on Papakeechie Lake. Both enjoy golf. Both chose Milford’s Big Boulder Golf Course this particular day. Williams and Schnedler tee off with their woods on the par three hole. “I like this course,” said Williams, walking towards his ball. “They keep the greens real nice.” Schnedler’s approach to the green landed next to the hole. “Stop that,” joked Williams. His friend broke even while he went one shot over par. On to the second hole.

“Look at this ball,” said Schnedler to Williams. “Suppose you know how many little holes are on this one. It seems to have more than most I have.” Both discuss the differences, then proceed with their game. “There’s one rule about golf,” said Williams when teeing up for the third hole. “Never talk when someone is taking a shot.” After both approached the third green, Williams added: “I play golf whenever I can. I*belong to a couple of leagues down in Florida (he lives in Jacksonville during the winter). I even played while I was in the service. That’s when a few guns were strapped to my waist. It didn’t do much for my game.” It was getting hot, about 85 degrees. It was humid, too. “Let’s stand in the shade when we get to the next hole,” Schnedler suggested. After a short rest, the two continued playing at a brisk pace, carrying their golf bags between strokes They probably finished their nine-hole game before the heat got worse. The 10th hole couldn’t come any sooner.
