Flenar named Sir Lancelot DuLac

Don Flenar, a Grace College student, competing as “Knight of Etna Green,” defeated six other opponents in capturing the Mermaid Festival Tournament of Knights competition Saturday and was named Sir Lancelot Du Lac for 1986. Flenar, a Tippecanoe Valley High School graduate and a current assistant basketball coach at Grace College, garnered 77 points in the competition, defeating last year’s champion, Tracy Slone of Ligonier, by six points. While at Tippecanoe Valley, Flenar participated in basketball, track, football and tennis. He was also named academic AllState honorable mention in basketball. At Grace College, he was a member of the basketball and golf teams before becoming an assistant basketball coach. He was sponsored in the competition by the Etna Green Senior ONO. Slone, who was sponsored by the Ligonier Chamber of Commerce, is a graduate of West Noble High School and is now attending Cumberland College in Lebanon, Tenn., on a baseball

Pokagon to host Governor's Cup

Pokagon State Park will host the seventh of nine regional races in the third annual AUL/Governor’s Cup Running Series on Saturday, August 16, at 9 a m. Each regional race and the AUL/Governor’s Cup includes an 8-Kilometer (4.97 miles) race and a one mile fun run. “These are events the entire family will enjoy,” said Governor Robert D. Orr. “We planned the running series, with hopes of providing something for everyone. Beginning runners, experienced runners, wheelchair racers, and Hoosiers of all ages are encouraged to participate,” added Orr. Registration forms for the series can be obtained at the park or by calling the toll free hotline at 1-800-622-4931. In Fort Wayne, contact Aul General Harold P. Roe at 423-1416. The remainder of the field was Tom Schermerhorn of West Noble with 65 points; Tyler Coley of Concord High School and Grace College with 64 points; Jamie Ferguson of Tuscon, Ariz., who was sponsored by an association from Muncie, finished with 55 points; Lee Stevens of Bourbon and now attends Bethel College, 48 points; and Brian Yahne of Concord High School and Marian College with 42 points. The participants competed in various sports, including throwing a football and softball for distance and accuracy, football punting, basketball one-on-one and free throw shooting, golf putting, tennis accuracy, and long and short running events. The top five finishers each received a trophy, with first place receiving a SSOO scholarship, which can be applied to schooling or donated to the charity of the winners choice. Second place received a S2OO scholarship, and the last three places each received a SIOO scholarship.

No fee will be charged for participation in the fun run. Numerous awards and prizes in 32 divisions, including the male and female wheelchair divisions and the age 80 and over divisions, will be presented to participants in the BK. Ribbons will be awarded to fun run finishers. All 8K division winners will be guests for the 1986 AUL/Governor’s Cup Run scheduled in Indianapolis Sept. 27. In addition to the seventh race at Pokagon State Park, the next two events in the series are: the Potato Creek State Park Race, Sept. 20 and 10 a.m., and the AUL/Governor’s, Sept. 27 at 10 a.m. Fun run begins 30 minutes prior to the 8K races at each event.
