It happened...in Milford
10 YEARS AGO, JUNE 30,1076 The town of Milford walked off with a lion’s share of top honors at the 31st Annual Mermaid Festival in North Webster. Joann Rassi, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell Rassi, was named “Queen of Lakes.” Rachel Morris, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Morris, was named ‘‘Miss Congeniality.” First place in the Queen’s Conveyance went to ‘‘Miss Milford,” Joann Rassi, and the Milford Youth Leagpe team won this year’s baseball competition. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Nordin, r 2, Milford, are hosting guests from Sweden. Mr. and Mrs. Arme Bergstrom and their son Torbyom and daughter Monica are visiting the Nordins for two weeks. They are from Honick, Sweden. While in Indiana, the Bergstroms are spending some time camping in the South Bend area. Several Milford students completed work for degrees at Ball State University in Muncie. Receiving bachelor of science 1 degrees were Deborah Howard,
Behind the headlines —
The 'Hate America' myth
By PHILIP C. CLARKE Kurt Vonnegut, the well-known American author created a considerable stir the other day with a letter to the New York Times claiming the United States is “the most hated nation on earth.” The liberal writer then posed a rhetorical question: “What do you suppose is the explanation?” Accepting Vonnegut’s premise, one reader suggested that foreigners envy America more than hate it. Aaron Katz of Brooklyn wrote that “thousands of immigrants, legal and illegal, leftists and right-wingers, find their way to our shores, many seeking sanctuary. There is plenty to apologize for in our nation but there is also ample cause for pride. Not least are our healthy traditions, our Bill of Rights freedoms and our determination to safeguard such freedoms. ...” Paul Leonard countered Vonnegut’s question with one of his own: “Do the people of Poland and Afghanistan hate the U.S. more than any other nation?” Other questions come to our mind. If America is so hated, why have nearly a million Vietnamese, Cambodians and Laotians risked everything to flee their communist-ruled nations to settle in the United States? An estimated half million others have perished in the attempt since 1975. Why, also, do some 3 to 4 million Mexicans risk arrest to cross our borders each year? And since Fidel Castro seized power, why have more than 1 million Cubans left everything behind to seek a new life in America? For over two centuries, millions upon millions of immigrants from around the world have streamed to our shores. Many came to seek new economic opportunities; but most were drawn to America because more than any other nation on earth it offered freedom. And still does. There are among us leftist intellectuals and pseudosophisticates who consider ifohic to knock America, as is their right. But in so doing, they would do well to ponder whether they could exercise such rights in other countries where democracy is but a dream. Indeed, at least two-thirds of all the people on earth suffer oppression of one degree or another. If the Kurt Vonneguts don’t believe it, we suggest they take to any of the refugees from tyranny who con-

daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Silas Howard, William 0. Leemon, son of Mr. and Mrs. William A. Leemon, and Joann E. Reuter, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Reuter. 20 YEARS AGO, JUNE 29,1966 Milford Cub Master Frank Scott announced plans are underway for an outing of Cub Pack 47 at Pioneer Trails, the district Boys Scout Camp. A picnic was held at the Milford Lake Pavilion for the regularly scheduled pack meeting in June. More than 50 parents and children were present to enjoy a cookout of hamburgers and hot dogs. Miss Beth Atkinson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Atkinson of Milford, has been named to the Dean’s List of honor students for the spring term at Manchester College in North Manchester. Miss Atkinson has recently completed her freshman year at Manchester College. 30 YEARS AGO, JULY 5,1956 Miss Jean Anglin, daughter of Mrs. Harry Phend, Milford, left
tinue to arrive in America in endless numbers. Recently, Harry Gray, board chairman of United Technologies, summed up his feelings in a full page ad in the Wall Street Journal. “The dumbest person in the world,” said Gray, is “the American who knocks what he’s got.” “Here’s what he’s got: A country of unbounded beauty. Almost unlimited natural resources. A judicial system that is the envy of the rest of the world. Food so plentiful (that) overeating is a major problem. A press nobody can dominate. A ballot box nobody can stuff. Churches of your choice. One hundred million jobs. Freedom to go anywhere you want, with the planes, cars and highways to get you there. Social security. Medicare. Unemployment insurance. Public schools and plentiful scholarships' Opportunity to become a millionaire.” Beat that if you can, Mr. Complainer! (Distributed by America's Future. Inc . Tombs of the Unknowns
An atmosphere of solemnity and dignity pervades the Tomb of the Unknowns in Arlington Cemetery. Visitors are impressed by the stately white marble monument and the military bearing of the troops who serve as honor guards. Appropriately, the casket of the first soldier -a hero of World War I - who was interred here in an emotional ceremony on Armistice Day, 1921, was draped with the American flag.

The bodies of Americans who made the supreme sacrifice in World War 11, Korea and Vietnam have since been added. Perhaps here, more than in any other location, or on any other occasion, the flag reflects its intrinsic value, a banner of consolation and comfort in time of distress.

The Wayfarer tour is made up of pupils and young teachers who will visit England, Holland, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France and Monaco. They plan to return to the United States August 17. Orville Moore of Elkhart, who is laying out the town of Milford and selling house numbers, reported this week he is meeting with a marvelous response. He is carrying out a part of the Lions Club plan to lay out the town, selling house numbers and posting signs on all the corners of the town. Milford Happy Bachelors 4-H Club held their annual tour and judging contest on July 3. Projects were visitied and discussed.
