Three thefts, vandalism at Syracuse
Three thefts and one report of vandalism interrupted an otherwise quiet week for Syracuse Police, with no values ascribed to any of the stolen merchandise. Dave Stell, 36 North Shore Drive, reported a Super Fox radar detectorK was taken sometime between 7:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m., Friday, June 27, from his car, which was left unlocked on the 100 block of Main Street. In a similar incident, Stuart Walker, 119 W.E. Long Dr., reported the theft of an MC-715 Home Stereo from a vehicle parked at the residence. Taken sometime between 11 p.m., Saturday, June 28, and 7 a.m., Sunday, June 29, the victim claimed that the car was locked, although police found no evidence of forced entry. A JC Penny 10-speed bicycle was stolen from the Matt Ringler residence, 613 Medusa St., sometime Saturday, June 28, while vandalism was reported by Jennifer Stetler, Syracuse, at 12:33 p.m., Monday, June 30, after she found her 1978 Chevrolet Chevette had been damaged. The Stetler vehicle had been parked at the Tranter Graphic parking lot on Harrison Street when she discovered the window on the right side had been broken out and two slash marks were made in the front seat. Stetler reported that the car was fine when she went to work that morning, but was found damaged when she went to lunch. No estimate of damage was given by Syracuse Police.
Still searching for possible drowning victim
Divers were still searching “Barrel and a Half Lake” at the Tri-County Fish and Game Wildlife Area Wednesday morning, investigating a possible drowning after an empty boat was discovered on the lake early Tuesday morning. Divers were called to the scene around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday and were continuing to search the lake Wednesday. Sewing basket An old train case makes an excellent sewing basket. The tray is just right for small sewing articles.

KIWANIANS HAVE DOUBLE PROGRAM — Wawasee Kiwanis Club enjoyed a combination of two programs on June 28. Roger Miller, a member of the Lakeland Club, gave an informative talk on agriculture in Kosciusko County. Os the 395,728 acres in the county, 50 percent are in harvestable cropland. The average age of farm operators is 52.1 years with the average owned acreage being 177.1 acres and the rented acreage being 163.9. The gross income varies from under SIO,OOO to over $250,000 with the largest percentage, 25.9 percent, being in the $40,000 to $99,999 group. The net income varies from 30 percent with a net loss to 2.7 percent over $50,000. a A number of farm operators are in financial difficulty with 52.4 percent having real estate debt and 75 percent of these being in financial trouble. One of the major reasons for the financial trouble is the depreciation of land value that was purchased on a high market with high interest rates. The market value of agriculture products in the county increased from $68,258,000 in 1974 to $115,215,000 in 1982. A farm operator today must be a good manager. Robert Watt, a club member and former police officer in South Bend, held the club members spellbound as he related experiences speaking on the subject, “The Cop on the Beat.” He claimed he never performed heroic deeds or received any medals. The experiences he shared negated the first part of that statement. He told a number of incidents in which he had to make quick decisions in handling subjects who were dangerously intoxicated. Sometimes these were much bigger than he and real tact and skill were needed. He learned that a cop on the beat must meet every situation squarely and maintain integrity. He must show no weakness. He found the work challenging, exciting, and many times he was able to help someone. Shown, left to right, are Robert Watt, Roger Miller of Lakeland Kiwanis, and Robert Sloop, president of the Wawasee Kiwanis.

Investors cautioned about Ginnie Maes
While the large majority of investors in Government National Mortgage Association (GNMA) securities (commonly referred to as Ginnie Maes) have earned profits on their investments, the Better Business Bureau notes that some securities dealers fail to caution investors that these profits are not always as high as advertised, and as is the case with all investments, Ginnie Maes are not risk free. Investors can buy “whole Ginnie Maes” securities backed by a portfolio of home mortgages for $25,000 each, or invest in a mutual fund pool for as little as several hundred dollars. The Federal Housing Administration or the Veterans Administration will make good on any homeowner defaults, and GNMA, which is part of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, guarantees that the borrowers’ payments reach the owners of the securities. However, these two often advertised government “guarantees” do not protect Ginnie Mae investors should the mutual fund broker go broke or steal a customer’s money. Nor will they guarantee that interest rates won’t rise or decline, thus changing the advertised yield on the investment.

The federal government’s Securities and Exchange Commission recently issued warnings to a number of Ginnie Mae fund brokers, calling for them to change their prospectuses and clarify their advertisements. Say, for example, that an advertisement proclaims that you can “triple your investment in just 12 months.” What some ads don’t point out is that this profit margin depends on certain market conditions. Without these conditions the profit will likely be lower than advertised. Lower returns often occur when declining interest rates spur large
