By GLEN LONG * Staff Writer “If I had known preaching was so much fun, I would have done it sooner,” is the comment of Rev. Lewis Hathaway, who has moved to Syracuse as minister of Saint Andrew’s United Methodist Church. This is representative of his positive “look on the bright side” attitude. His manner indicates that he means this statement, although it is a little strange for someone who preached his first sermon at the age of eight. It was then that he experienced a conversion commitment and stood to speak in the church in which he was raised. Many years passed between that experience and his becoming a minister after graduating from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio. He graduated from Ridgeville High School; moved to Muncie, where he met his wife; Joan; served in the United States Army and graduated from Ball State University at the age of 33. The Hathaways moved to the Elkhart area where he began his career as a teacher at Concord High School. The pastor then left teaching and entered the building construction industry. After

several years he returned to teaching and taught building trades at the Elkhart Area Career Center. The commitment which he had made at the age of eight then came to the fore and Rev. Hathaway began studying for the ministry in 1976, graduating in 1979. Prior to his new pastorate at St. Andrew's, he served for four years as pastor at the First United Methodist Church in East Chicago. It is apparent that the pastor likes his ministerial career. To accentuate the positive is where I’m going to be.” “Having grown up in a smaller town,” said Rev. Hathaway, “Syracuse is like coming home again. to continue the tradition of friendliness at St. Andrew’s Church which Rev. Phil Frew helped build in his 10 years as the local pastor “I would like for the parishoners to know that they will not upset me if they choose to contact Phil Frew at any time,” he stated "I’m thankful he’s close enough to continue ties with his many friends here ” The Hathaways have six children and .16 grandchildren. The pastor smilingly commented that, having gone to school in Muncie, Joan is still an avid Bearcat basketball fan, but she will probably heartily support the Wawasee Warrior sports program
