Use fan for air conditioning
Looking for away to cut down on air conditioning costs this summer? You may want to consider installing a whole-house fan. Lieutenant Governor John M. Mutz, Director of the Indiana Department of Commerce, Division of Energy Policy, says a whole-house fan removes hot indoor air from throughout the house and replaces it with relatively cooler air from outdoors, reducing indoor temperatures and providing the breeze-like cooling effect of moving air. It is important to understand that it's not just air temperature that affects your comfort, it is air movement as well. The breeze produced by a whole-house fan makes the air feel 4 to 10 degrees cooler than it actually is, depending on relative humidity and air velocity. The fan should be started in the early evening when the outdoor temperature drops below 82 degrees. Hot air from rooms and hallways is then drawn through a ceiling opening, channeled through the attic to exhaust openings, and expelled to the outdoors. It should run all night, bringing in cooler air and lowering

A brief report on the Abbott's Candy Caramel sale was presented. It was reported the original 500 boxes of caramels were spoken for and Jane Nearing had obtained an additional 200 boxes with 300 boxes to be obtained on June 25. It was noted Mrs. Nearing is in charge of the candy sales and should be contacted for sales. Bill Beemer, chairman, reported the Franzen Brothers Circus was not available this year but could be scheduled for next spring. It was decided he should try and get the circus during the celebration with a spring date as an alternate. In general discussion, Hampton remarked the ministerial association will sponsor an old fashioned revival service during the boat-in worship service on July 5 and that Ed Bogart will coordinate a fishing contest throughout the sesquicentennial celebration. Suggestions on selling copies of a song Naomi McFarland wrote for Syracuse, having a professional photographer tape events during the celebration, and having copies of old postcards available for sale was discussed and will be looked into. It was also suggested a replica of the arch over Main Street be considered and installed. The next committee meeting will be Monday. July 21, at 7:30 p.m., in the Syracuse Scout Cabin, all interested persons are encouraged to attend and help plan the 150th celebration.
the temperature of the house. The benefit is quickly lost, however, if the fan is allowed to run after the temperature starts to rise in the morning. [ A whole-house fan usually costs S4OO to S6OO installed, and runs on one-tenth the energy of an air conditioner. For more information, contact the Indiana Energy Hotline at 1-800-382-4631.
