Indiana Central now Indianapolis U.
Indianapolis has a new university — with an 84-year history. Indiana Central University announced during last week’s commencement exercise that it is changing its name to the University of Indianapolis. The announcement was made by Dr. Gene E. Sease, president of the school. The name change, which was approved by the school’s board of trustees, takes effect immediately. The announcement came as a surprise to the students, faculty, ans staff of the United Methodist school. “We want to hitch our ■ wagon to a rising star,” Sease said as he announced the name change. A loud cheer from several thousand students, faculty, alumni, parents, and friends seemed to indicate the change will be popular. Sease said he expect the change will enhance the university’s image. “This institution has earned the name University of Indianapolis,” he said. “We were one of the early settlers in Indianapolis. We were born here and had our childhood here. Now we have reached maturity, as has the city, and the name change is fitting. No longer will people ask

‘where is that place?’” Indianapolis Mayor William Hudnut, who is also on the school’s board, was on hand for the announcement and praised the move. “For years, many Indianapolis citizens have cherished the hope that someday, somehow, there might be a University of Indianapolis,” Hudnut said. “Now here we have the prospect of an independent, private, already established university located in the heart of this great city, renaming itself the University of Indianapolis. That is good news. The city’s stature will be enhanced by a strong liberal institution carrying our name. ’ ’ The change also drew praise from Governor Robert Orr and Senator Richard Lugar, vice chairman of the university’s board of trustees. “This exciting change opens a new vista for a university which has long served Indiana,” Orr said. “The bright future for the University of Indianapolis will enhance our capital city and our state.” * Lugar said one of his unfulfilled dreams while mayor of In- . dianapolis was having a citynamed university. “With this an-

nouncement that dream has been fulfilled,” he said. During commencement Sease also announced that the school will launch a 25 million dollar, six-year, fund drive in October. Half of the money collected will be used to raise the university’s endowment from 13.5 million dollars to 25 million dollars, to increase scholarships, and to endow professorships. The remainder will be used to build a fine arts center on the campus. Indiana Central was founded in 1902. When Sease became the university’s fifth president in 1970 the school’s endowment stood at $600,000. It is now 13.5 million dollars. There are 3,500 students enrolled in undergraduate and graduate classes, with an additional 4,000 taking continuing education classes each year. Sease also announced the donation of 2.5 million dollars from the Krannert Charitable Trust to establish the Krannert Graduate School of Physical Therapy The graduate program in physical therapy was founded in 1980 and is considered one of the top three of the nation’s 15 programs. It is the first to be endowed as a named school.

Decks, patios need landscape fabric
Homeowners nationwide have spoken. Statistics provided by the construction industry show the number one outdoor home improvement made in 1985 was the addition of a deck or patio. The reason is clear. The trend toward outdoor entertaining that sprouted in the west is now blooming across the country — even in the midwest. Sales of barbecue grills, planters and outdoor furniture are keeping pace, according to distributors of the products. The result is that people are making the most of outdoor living with their new “living room.” In fact, it can be the largest room of the house) Unlike most rooms, though, these new rooms can have problems. Decks built near the ground can be plagued with weeds, and patios can crack or heave with the frost-thaw cycle of the changing seasons. Controlling weeds and repairing patios can steal precious leisure time and create unnecessary expenses, unless homeowners take a simple precaution early in the construction project. Either as a do-it-yourself or contractor-built project, a deck or patio requires proper base preparation to minimize maintenance and to lengthen the life of the structure. An easy and inexpensive way to ensure the base is prepared properly is to use a Landscape Fabric. Landscape Fabric is a relatively new product introduced by the Du Pont Company for residential use. Du Pont Landscape Fabric is a lightweight, man-made material with tiny pores, that aid drainage, but will block weeds. For a deck built near to the ground, ground preparation involves clearing away all sod and other plant growth under the deck area. Slope the ground away from the house foundation, then roll out the Landscape Fabric on the bare dirt. The edges should be overlapped about six inches. Once the fabric covers the deck area, spread about three-to-four

inches of mulch ar stone underneath the deck area, as would normally be done. For a brick or concrete patio, lay landscape fabric on cleared and leveled ground. Spread at least four inches of sand over the fabric and then level and pack. This layer prevents the sand and dirt from mixing over time, and keeps the structure sound and solid.
