KEEPING SKILLS SHARP — Miss Miller’s second grade students at Syracuse Elementary will be keeping their skills sharp this summer. Each student will receive a folder filled with worksheets and activities in math, spelling, language, reading, writing, and science. Miss Miller has devised a calendar for each month of summer vacation. There is one task the student is to complete each day. The parents are also involved by either doing the activity with their children or by grading their children’s work. “The students seem to be excited about having something to do on the lazy days of summer,’* said Miss Miller. & Pictured are the students with their work folders. Area athletes compete in Great Race

ELKHART — The sixth annual Elkhart County Great Race boasted nearly 1,700 competitors to run, walk, pedal, paddle and swim their way through the Memorial Day weekend on behalf of the Elkhart YMCA’s program for underprivileged children and Hospice. Football camp moved to June 2

Myron Dickerson, head football coach at Wawasee High School, has announced that the seventh and eight grade football camp has been moved up to June 2. It will be a non-contact camp and will be conducted between 10:15-11:45 am., Monday through Friday. The camp will end June 13. In addition, Dickerson will be at the Wawasee High School front office, from 10:30 a.m. to noon this Saturday for anyone who wants to sign up.

This special award recognizes outstanding athletic achievement since it requires 18 points, which are tallied by major and minor letter awards. An athlete must have at least seven major awards (worth two points) and four minor awards (one point) to win a blanket. Nine major awards will also qualify.

Moth students take third

The statewide results from the Indiana Mathematics League have recently been received by Syracuse Middle School. Each grade level, grades six, seven and eight, entered the contest and each placed in the top quartile. There were 405 schools entered in the sixth grade contest. Syracuse placed third among all schools entering in Kosciusko, Marshall, and Noble counties. Their total of 156 correct answers was good enough to win other regions. their eight county region (DeKalb; Elkhart, Huntington, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, and Whitley), their team total was also an excellent 156. A total of 227 eighth grade teams also competed in the contest. The Syracuse team totaled 153 in this contest for another top quartile finish. As with the seventh grade, the score was not good enough to place in their eight county region. The mathematics instructors at Syracuse Middle School are Janet Dunno, Ted Mahnensmith, and Kaz Szynal.
