History comes to life in museum

There’s nothing like seeing history come to life through the comforts and necessities of times past. Milford residents and other interested patrons will have this opportunity when the historical museum opens its doors June 2. Inside the museum, located in Dr. Floyd Reinheimer’s old downtown office, will be quilts, photos, Indian artifacts, clothing,

furniture, farm tools, dishes, paintings and even a large map from the Felkner family. “We’ve been collecting history and locating items,” said Charlotte Siegfried, who chairs the historical committee, which works with the museum committee, chaired by Ruth Hoppus. Together, these groups have collected “anything” of historical

value to Milford’s sesquicentennial celebration. Others actively involved are Julia Meyers, Dr. Reinheimer, Vera Schell, Murtle Felkner, Howard Estep and Shirley Timmons, who will arrange the display of the items. The museum will be open from 2 to 8 p.m. daily until June 7. As of now, Siegfried is unsure who will staff it during those hours, but someone will always be present when the museum is open.

Jaycees are only 6 years old

Charted by the Goshen chapter in 1980, the Milford Jaycees has been a vital part of the community for six years — contributing to various funds and helping the town improve and expand. “We try to have at least two projects each year to raise money for community concerns,” said member Andy Brown, noting that the club contributed to the sesquicentennial fund this year, while work towards the library is being planned. The organization also sponsors a “toys for tots” program each Christmas, giving underprivileged children toys. However, not all is work within the club, with a campout, canoe trip, and bus trip to a Chicago Cubs game entering the agenda. While 35 members made up the club in its charter year, numbers have remained around 20 since that time. Rick Graff served as the first president of the junior chamber of commerce, while six have followed, including Dick Koshnick this year. Ten charter members remain on the club, which requires contestants to be aged 18-35. The Milford organization has taken advantage of a lot of the self development programs offered at the state level, with many members participating in business and management classes. The club meets every first and third Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the family room of C.J.s Restaurant, on Dewart Lake. Wagons were the first buses By 1918 the “good old days" were gone. Boys and girls no longer had to walk miles to attend school. They were picked up by wagons with from 80 to 90 wagons being used to transport Kosciusko County students to their respective schools.
