Tuesday. John Nemeth paced the Warriors with a nine-hole score of 37. Wawasee, as a team, finished the course with 161 strokes.
The “B” team upped its mark to 6-5 with the double win, completing the course in 165 strokes. Jeff Taylor led the way with a 40. Other top scorers for the varsity were Derek Smith 41, Darin Atwood 41, Dave O’Neal 42 and Tim Keim 43. Rich Freeman backed up Taylor’s “B” team effort with a solid 41. Doug Nigbor and Brett Harter each followed with 42 strokes. Last Thursday, Atwood sparked the Warriors to a double win over Huntington North and Central Noble at South Shore. Wawasee’s four-man total was 322. Huntington North scared a 325 and Central Noble shot 344. Nemeth and Smith each shot a 79 for the Warriors while Nigbor and Taylor followed with scores of 87and 86, respectively. The “B” team split the meet, finishing the 18-hole course in 366 strokes. Huntington North scared 348 and Central Noble tallied 368. Last Wednesday, Northridge victimized Wawasee at the Oak Hill Golf Course with 156 strokes. The Warriors finished with 163. Nemeth led Wawasee with a 38. Atwood shot a 40 and Smith added a 41.

Giris take third place in NLC meet
WARSAW — Spurred by two individual first places, the Wawasee girls’ track team finished third in the Northern Lakes Conference meet Tuesday, winch was hosted by Warsaw. Steph Jamiel was crowned NLC 400-meter champion with a solid time 1:02.4 in that event. The same goes for Michelle Harter in the shot put. Her 37-foot, 9-inch toss earned her top honors as well as a new school record. The Lady Warriors scored 60% points as a team. Warsaw won the meet with 120%. Bremen was second with 72. Lady Warriors lose 4-1 match to Fairfield
A 4-1 match loss to Fairfield Monday was the seventh setback of the season for the Wawasee girls’ tennis team. Ulrike Assman was the only winner as she defeated her first singles opponent, Donna Bender, 2-6, 7-5 and 6-4. At second singles, Katrina Otis beat Lisa Noble 6-2 and 6-0, and Heather Keiper lost to her third singles foe, Tonie Miller, 7-5, 36 and 6-2. Wawasee dropped both doubles matches as well. Tonya Helmuth and Toni Reed defeated Lora Hollar and Jennifer Morgan, 6-4 and 6-1. At Second doubles, Cheryl Mast and Melanie Morehouse beat Marti Wright and Shawn Anderson, 7-5,3-6 and 6-2. The junior varsity, however, won 4-3. Last Thursday, the Lady Warriors were blanked, 5-0, by Concord. The loss dropped Wawasee’s Northern Lakes Conference ledger to (W. The Lady Warriors are 3-7 overall.

Belinda Whitridge claimed fifth in the 100-meters with 13.2. Jeanine Gunn placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 15-feet, 7V4-inches. She also tied for sixth in the high jump with a 4-foot, 10-inch effort. Boys look to NIC meet after 3-7 season
The Wawasee boys’ track team will bead into the Northern Lakes Conference meet with an overall record of 3-7, and a league mark of 2-5. The most recent dual meet setback came at Northridge Monday night, 75-52. The Warriors also dropped a double dual meet to North Wood and Plymouth last Wednesday, scoring just 24 points. Plymouth tallied 78 while host North Wood bad 59. The NLC meet will be Thursday at 5:30 p.m. at Warsaw. Steve Galegor is the only Warrior with a top seeding, earning that distinction in the 300-meter low hurdles. He is the fourth seed in the high hurdle race. Jay Rhodes is seeded third in the discus while Steve Sturgill is fifth. Scott McDowell is seeded third in the shot put. Other seedings are: Gary Stockman, fifth in the long jump; Carl Rouch, sixth in the 1600-meter; Mike Meek, sixth in the 100-meters, Sturgill, seventh in the shot put; Troy Minton, seventh in the 800-meters and Tim Mangas, seventh in the 400-meters. Three Winners At North Wood Though losing both ends of a double dual, Wawasee showed some promise with a few individual efforts. Galegor timed 39.7 in the 300-meter lows for first. Other wins came from McDowell in the shot put (50-feet, 6-inches) and* Stockman in the long jump (20-feet, 1-inch). Syracuse girls coast by Webster in dual meet
The Syracuse sixth grade girls’ track team opened its season with a 77-30 win over North Webster. Coached by Jo Hepler, the Lady Yellow Jackets won nine events. Stephanie Skelton and Kim Harter were triple winners.

The Wawasee Junior High golf team won its final two matches of the season by defeating Central Noble, 251-270 and West Noble, 247-335. In the two matches, Randy Cesco had scores of 41 and 45. The Michiana Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, Sigma Delta Chi, presented awards May 4 to 19 students from 11 schools at the awards reception for the chapter’s 10th annual High School Journalism Contest The contest recognized outstanding writing, editing and photography in the students’ high school newspapers. For best high school newspaper with under 1,000 students, second place went to Wawasee Smoke Signals; Sheila Bogart, editor-in-chief; Joel Robbins, advisor For schools with over 1,000 students, second place went to Genesis of Elkhart Memorial; Robin Gibson, editor-in-chief; Janice Dean, advisor.
