Lady Warriors win two of three meets '

The Wawasee girls’ track team added two more wins to its record, taking a double dual meet against Goshen and North Wood last Thursday. The Lady Warriors scored 71 total points. Goshen had 45 and host North Wood scored 20. Wawasee posted eight first places. Steph Jamiel was a double winner, taking first in the 100-meter hurdles (16.2) and the 400-meter dash (1:02). Jeanine Gunn also won two events: the high jump (5-feet, 1-inch) and the long jump (16-feet, 3-inches). Other winners included Belinda Whitridge in the 100-meter dash (12.9); Becca Stiver in the 300-meter hurdles (52.1); Rhonda Stookey in the discus (89-feet, 8-inches); and the 1600-meter relay team of Shelly Landis, Kristina Lange, Stiver and Jamiel (4:23.9). The Wawasee Junior High golf team won its “B” and “C” matches against Westview last Friday. The “B” team triumphed with 251 strokes to Westview’s 303. The Wawasee boys’ golf team may have had its best day last Saturday, winning th<* Wawasee Invitational with 311 total strokes at South Shore. The performar.ee was good enough to edge out South Bend St. Joseph’s by three strokes for top honors. “It was a good day for us,” said Coach Rudy Cesco. “We played to our present capabilities.” John Nemeth paced the Warriors with a 75 and tied Gates Grainger of St. Joseph’s for low medalist. However, Nemeth lost the honors in a playoff round, r Derek Smith followed with 76 strokes and Darin Atwood shot a 79. “Jeff Taylor’s 81 was a real good contribution,” said Cesco. “Qarin Atwood had a real good I day, too.” Doug Nigbor rounded out the field with a 92. “What was good about this win was that we finished four strokes ahead of Carroll, which was the third ranked team in the state,” added Cesco. “It was just a great day for Wawasee golf. ” Total team scores were:. Michelle Harter set a school record in the shot put with a winning toss of 37-feet, 4-inches. Last Saturday, Wawasee competed in the East Noble Relays and finished eighth out of 16 teams. Top performances included a 1:08.7 in the shuttle hurdle (Steff Swihart, Kelly Mitchell, Whitridge and Jamiel) for third; a 35-foot, 9-inch toss in the shot put by Harter for third; a 15-foot, 10-inch effort in the long jump by Gunn for fourth; and a time of 9:52 in the distance medley relay by Stiver, Gunn, Jamiel and Jennifer Titus for fourth. In all, the Lady Warriors tallied 23 points. To this point, Coach Janet Dunno mentioned that Wawasee has qualifying times for sectionals in the 1600-meter relay, 100-meter hurdles, 1600-meter run, 200-meter dash, 400-meter run, long jump, high jump, shot put andßoo-meterrun.

Wawasee boys take fourth place at Warrior relays

The Wawasee boys’ track team tallied 62 points and placed fourth in the 1 sixth annual Warrior Relays last Monday at Wawasee. Northern Lakes Conference rival Plymouth dominated the meet, placing first with 120 points. In addition, two new meet records were established. Plymouth’s Brett Starr heaved the discus 164-feet, 8-inches while Matt Eckert of Manchester leaped 21-feet, 10-inches in the long jump. The Warriors boasted two winners. Steve Galegor clocked 39.5 in the 300-meter low hurdles for top honors and Scott McDowell’s 50-foot, 6-inch toss was tops in the shot put. Other good efforts were turned in by Gary Stuckman, second in the long jump; Jay Rhodes, fourth in the discus; Todd McCulloch, fifth in the pole vault; and Todd Walker, fifth in the high jump. The following are team standings in the Warrior Relays: Plymouth (120), Manchester (79), North Wood (68), Wawasee (62), Whitko (42), Tippecanoe Valley (35), Columbia City (6). South Shore ladies hold breakfast

The South Shore Ladies Golf League held its opening day Sunday, May 4, with a breakfast in South Shore Golf Club. Gloria Stoffell, president, was in charge of the meeting and introduced Ethel Hughes, vice president; and Ann Galahan, secretarytreasurer. Bob Carlson, golf pro, gave a short talk which was followed by a mixed event scramble. Tuesday night bowlers have spring banquet

Members of the Syracuse Tuesday Night Ladies bowling league held their annual spring banquet April 29, at Gropp’s. Pat Snyder, president, opened the meeting with Suzi Pachynski, secretary-treasurer, reading the minutes and giving the treasurer’s report. During the election of officers, Deb Lovellette and Pachynski were re-elected as vice president and secretary-treasurer, respectively. Mary Wiggs and Lovellette will be the junior bowling representatives for the league. Barbara Means was presented with a triplicate patch for rolling three straight games of 135. Lori Kammerer received the most improved average award for increasing her average by 15 pins. The league high series award was given to Betty Swihart for a 581 performance. First place trophies and patches were given to Joy Hostetler, Judy West and Peg Welty, who are members of the Wau-Beez team. At the end of the season, Wau-Beez and the Go Getters teams were still tied and had to re-bowl the 10th frame with the Wau-Beez team winning.
