Welborn resigns as head wrestling coach at Wawasee

He coached Brad Traviolia and Lance Lantz to state championships this past season. He built Wawasee's wrestling program into a well-respected area power during his time as head coach. He has guided four semistate champions, nine regional winners, 38 sectional winners and 20 conferencechamps After seven years. Rich Welborn has resigned as head wrestling coach at Wawasee High School. He will keep his duties as a government teacher. The Warrior wrestling program accomplished many team honors under Welborn's leadership. In addition to a fourth place finish at the state meet in Indianapolis this year, Wawasee claimed two Northern Lakes Conference titles, four sectional titles, two regional titles, two

Lacrosse cluS beaten by New Trier, 3-2

Last Saturday, the Wawasee Lacrosse club tost to New Trier East High School in Winnetka, 111., 3-2. Though short-handed, the Wawasee team pushed New Trier to sudden death overtime before losing. Wawasee also staged a comeback Down 2-0 in the fourth quarter, the club stormed back with two quick goals to tie the contest. The club will host the same New Trier club this Saturday on the practice football field at 2 p.m. Then on the following weekend, Wawasee will travel to Grand Rapids, Mich., for a round-robin tourney. The club will take another trip to Grand Rapids the weekend after that and will also (day two games against Culver Military. Presently, Wawasee sports a 1-4 record.

Now 4-1 — Golfers beat Warsaw and Goshen

The Wawasee boys’ golf team upped its record to 4-1 with a double win over Warsaw and Goshen at the South Shore Golf Course Tuesday. Freshman Doug Nigbor led the Warriors with a 77. Darin Atwood and Derek Smith each shot 79 in the 18-hole course. Wawasee shot 316 as a team. Warsaw and Goshen followed with 323 and 333 strokes, respectively. “We had good shooting yesterday,” said Coach Rudy Cesco. “And we had perfect weather for golf and hopefully, we’U get tuned-up for Saturday (when Wawasee hosts its own invitational).” Dave O’Neal and John Nemeth rounded out the field with scores of 81. Nemeth and Atwood led Wawasee with a 38 and a 39, respectively, to defeat South Bend Riley and Fairfield. The Warriors finished the course in 158 strokes while Riley had 165. Fairfield posted a 184. Other individual scores were: Nigbor 40, Smith 41 and O’Neal 43. Last Saturday, the Warriors placed 10th in the Lafayette Invitational with 338 strokes? Atwood and Nemeth led the Warriors with scores of 81 and 82. Number one-ranked Kokomo won the meet with 304 strokes.

Bass fishing contest held last weekend

A bass fishing tournament was held at Syracuse and Wawasee lakes last weekend This event attracted many out-of-town participants, mostly professional bass fishermen. The largest catch was a 5-pound. 14-ounce largemouth bass. The contest was sponsored by the Great Plains Angler’s Association. The winner, who catches the highest total weight of fish, gets a $2,500 prize. In addition, 15-year-old Bill DeVerney caught a 1-pound, 7-ounce bluegill over the weekend. He did not compete in the contest.

Lady Warriors drop match to Warsaw

The Wawasee girls’ tennis team lost a Northern Lakes Conference match at Warsaw Tuesday, 4-1. Ulrike Assman was the lone winner for the Lady Warriors, defeating her first singles nent Lynnae Ginter. 6-2 and 6-0. In other matches, Michelle Haines of Warsaw defeated Lisa Noble at second singles, 6-1. 3-6 and 6-4 Sonya Scott beat Lora Hollar at third singles, 6-0 and 6-3. In doubles play. Crystal Drake and Linda Parke outlasted Christi Weaver and Heather Keiper, 6-4 and 6-4. Staci Nellans and Sally Parke dominated Marci Wright and Jennifer Morgan, 6-1 and 6-L ; Wawasee's record drops to 2-2 overall, and 0-2 in NLC action. The Lady Warriors won two junior varsity matches. Eight rookies join Indy 500 Race

INDIANAPOLIS - Eight drivers without previous experience in an Indianapolis 500-mile race will share the spotlight with seven former winners of the event when practice gets underway Saturday for the 70th running of the International Classic on May 25. Five of the rookies are toreignborn drivers: Roberto Moreno of Brazil, Jan Lammers of Holland. Jacques Villeneuve of Canada, Rupert Keegan of England and lan Ashley of Germany. The other three are Phil Kruegdt, Randy Lanier and Rick Miaskiewicz. In addition to the five rookies, the list of foreign-born drivers includes Emerson Fittipaldi and Fishy Yea. the fish was too small to bother with, so 1 got a couple of guys to help me throw it back in the lake. —Bluejacket, Memphis.

Official time trials are scheduled on the weekends of May 16-11 and 17-18. The 33 fastest qualifiers then &ill form the starting lineup on Race Day behind the Chevrolet Corvette pace car.
