Almost 200 compete — Boulder Dash race billed a success

By MARK HUFFMAN Staff Writer / Billed as an event that only takes place every 150 years, the Big Boulder Dash attracted nearly 200 participants last Saturday, April 19, despite windy conditions at the Milford golf course. ' “We had expected about 100 rupners, and whenever you can double the number you estimate than you know it’s going to be a success.” race director Elaine Weiss commented. Three states (Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan) and 32 communities were represented at the event, designed to raise money for Milford’s sesquicentennial celebration, June 1-7. “We also included information about the sesquicentennial in runners’ packets. • hoping that some of those people would come back in June,” Weiss added. Brian Zellner of Winona Lake, and Sally Campbell, South Bend, emerged from a pack of 145 runners entered in the 10-kilometer (6.2 miles) race to claim first place in the men’s and women’s divisions, with times of 34:03 and 42:34, respectively. Steve Kulp, Goshen, also celebrated his 32nd birthday with a victory of his own on the 10-K course Saturday. Kulp suffered a heart attack 11 months ago and has made a remarkable recovery, with medical help and a strenuous exercise program, evidenced by his time of 51:57 in the Big Boulder Dash. Overtaking 49 other runners and walkers in the one-mile event were Jeff Carrillo, Milford, and Heide Hochstetler, Nappanee. Runners often faced headstrong winds on the event, forcing them to retreat to a slower pace; nevertheless, a good time was had by all as Tshirts were given to participants, while post-race refreshments helped inexperienced runners recuperate. An aid station also provided relief for the long distance runners, with volunteers stationed at the three-mile mark to relay water. Milford’s oldest resident, Vera Schell, triggered the distance race from the north end of Main Street (across from the golf course), firing the starter’s gun at 9 a.m., while race committee member Rich Rhodes started the one-mile event on the northwestern edge of the course. Winding through rural sectors of Milford, the 10-K event ended near the Big Boulder clubhouse, while the one-mile trek took participants on a tour of the greens. About 30 volunteers helped make the races a success, while committee members Ron Baumgartner. Tony Clouse, Joe Dervin, Dan Schwab, Rich Rhodes, and Weiss also contributed several hours of preparation. While winners will unlikely be able to defend their titles at the next race in 2136, their grandchildren’s grandchildren will be hard-pressed to jnatch the success of the 1986 event: / 6.2 Mile Raise * Women 14 And Under TONYA MINER 56:40 Etna Green SARAH WHITE 75:31 Bristol Women 15-19 TAMMY WELLS 56:37 Elkhart Women 20-29 DEBBIE CARRICO 42:50 South Bend DIANE LOUDEM AN 43:58 Bremen DEB MILLER 47:29 Warsaw j. / MICHELLEBEARD 47:30 Goshen TAMARA A. Club wins

The Wawasee lacrosse club won its first game ever, defeating Notre Dame’s top-ranked intramural team, 3-2 last Saturday. “The win was a product of rigorous concentration and teamwork. We have a long way to go, and this win is very important to all of us,” said Travis Marsh, the team’s goalie. Defense and the mid-fielders ability to attack and control the ball keyed the victory. Wawasee will host Culver Military this Wednesday at 4:45 p.m.
