Traviofa signs with Northwestern

Wawasee High School senior Brad Traviolia ended all speculation Monday afternoon by signing a national letter of intent to accept a scholarship at Northwestern University, assuring at least four more years of competitive wrestling. The 155-pound state wrestling champion decided on the Big 10 school after visiting the Evanston, 111. campus last month. “I feel it’s the best place to get that ‘student-athlete’ mix, while it’s also close to home,” Traviolia said, noting that Mark Whitehead, a former Warsaw High School wrestler and friend of his, was also on the team. Northwestern Coach Tom Jarman, who is in his seventh year at the helm, was also pleased with Traviolia’s decision. “He fits well \ into the scheme of things, he’s tall — enabling him to move up a (weight) class, and is a fierce competitor,” he said, adding, “We (coaching staff) became sold on him when we saw the way he wrestled when he was down — he’s a fighter, which is something you can’t coach.” One doesn’t have to tell Rich Welborn, who has built Wawasee s wrestling program to include two state champions (Traviolia and Lance Lantz) this year, about the versatile athlete’s abilities. Taking an active part in the recruiting process, Welborn asked his four-year veteran to
