School junior class to be a delegate and alternate to Hoosier Girls’ State this year. Girls’ State is from June 15-22. - The delegate is Jennifer Kline, daughter of Leonard and Joan Kline. She is in band and was a member of the swim team. She is a member of a square dance club and has a part-time job. Cherie Martindale is the alternate and is the daughter of Larry and Patti Martindale. She is a member of FEA and NFL. Miss Martindale is secretary of the speech team and is on the year book staff as well as being a member of the Honor Society. She also has a part-time job. Hoosier Girls’ State is a program that has been sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary for 45 years. It will be conducted on the Indiana State University Campus, Terre Haute. This program is “government in action.”

They learn the duties of the offices in government by actually performing them. They also learn how to vote, write bills for the legislature and how these bills are passed and made into laws. Milford student earns honor Kathy K. Weisser, daughter of Fred and Diane Weisser of Milford, has been named on the president’s list for the 1985-86 winter quarter at Fayetteville Technical Institute. To qualify, students must take 12 or more hours and maintain at least a “B” average in each course taken. Weisser is a 1985 graduate of Wawasee High School. She is enrolled in the business program, working for a degree in the secretarial-executive field. Fayetteville Technical Institute is the second largest of the 58 institutions in the North Carolina Community College system. Difference There’s a difference between a strain and a sprain. A sprain occurs in a ligament while a strain is in a muscle.

Freshmen welcome May 29

On Thursday, May 29, from 7-11 p.m., Wawasee High School will be hosting the fifth annual “Freshmen Welcome” night. After a brief welcome, eighth graders from Milford, North Webster, and Syracuse will be treated to an evening of fun and friends. The purpose is to plan a social evening so that the three eighth grades can get together for the first time as the Wawasee High School Class of 1990. » Students will become familiar with the facilities and meet new friends while participating in several scheduled events. A dance will be held in the gym. Pizza and snacks will be available in the cafeteria during this time so bring along'a small amount of spending money. Casual dress is recommended. It will be a closed evening and once in, no one leaves until 11 p.m. or until a parent arrives. Parents are strongly urged to attend, as becoming the parent of a high school student creates adjustments. A specific presentation for parents will be held in the auditorium. This will allow an opportunity to ask questions and meet staff personnel. A tour of the school is also planned. After this, parents are invited to get acquainted with other parents while enjoying coffee and cookies in the library. Parents may join the students in the auditorium for a brief clos-

Winston Becker, principal at Milford schools, announced recently that they are conducting a survey to determine the number of children who will be attending kindergarten at Milford in September. Kindgarten Roundup will be held on April 17. School officials would like to know how many will be attending so they can complete their plans. To be eligible, a child must be five years old on or before September 1 and must reside in Van Buren or the east half of Jefferson Township. If anyone knows of a family with a child old enough for first grade in September but who did not attend kindergarten this year, have them contact the school office. Children who do nqf attend kindergarten should be tested to determine if they are prepared to enter first grade.
