Club drops contests

The Wawasee Lacrosse Club suffered two defeats after a busy week of action. Last Wednesday, the club lost to DeLasalle High School (of Detroit), 11-2. Last Saturday, the club was beaten by an intramural team from the University of Notre Dame, 8-4. Anthony Clark scored both goals against DeLasalle, including the first of the game. But, DeLasalle took control halfway through the first quarter and dominated the entire contest. “It was a super experience for everyone,” said club coach Thorpe Mitchell. “In fact, their coach (Mike Jolly of DeLasalle) complimented our team and told his own club not to take us lightly. DeLasalle has 75 players out for the sport and they had just beaten New Trier the day before they played us, and New Trier is one of the Chicago area’s top lacrosse teams.” Following the game, members of the DeLasalle club stayed at the homes of the Wawasee players for one night. A similar arrangement was worked out when DeLasalle played New Trier.

“We also benefited from having a college division I level official work the game,” added Mitchell. “Bob Schwitzer donated his time and did an excellent job.” Mitchell commended the efforts of players Travis Marsh (goalie), Clark, Mike Neterer, Rich Troup, Matt Line and Gary Harris. “We really made some strides,” he said. “We were better prepared than I thought because we played a very good team.” In Saturday’s 8-4 loss at South Bend, Mitchell was just as pleased. “This game worked out well for us,” he said. “We played against college level kids and gained some more valuable game experience.” The club will get more experience when it hosts Culver Military April 17, at 4 p.m. On the 26th, Wawasee will travel to New Trier for a game and will eventually host that team May 3. Other contests include a road date with Culver and home-and-home games with a team from Grand Rapids, Mich.
