New research demonstrates that the emergency medical identification system developed by the Medic Alert Foundation 30 years ago is saving substantial health care dollars today. Long advocated by physicians for the millions of people who have a hidden medical condition, Medic Alert was designed to prevent emergencies from turning into unnecessary tragedies. Now, with rising health care costs, a recent survey shows that Medic Alert wearers are realizing the professional medical record system’s value in reduced medical expenses. More than 20 percent of those responding to Medic Alert’s survey were told by medical professionals that Medic Alert assisted in accurate diagnosis or correct medication. A total of eight percent of respondents said that Medic Alert information reduced length of their hospital stay and level of treatment necessary for recovery. For 21 percent, treatment in the emergency room was expedited, and four percent reported savings in pharmaceutical costs. One in every 33 respondents credited Medic Alert with saving their lives. In addition, an emergency room study conducted under a grant' from the Robert Wood johnson Foundation found that 13,200 emergency cases daily in this country are complicated by lack of timely, accessible and reliable information. The emblem, which triggers Medic Alert’s emergency medical data system, is custom engraved on the reverse side with medical condition, member identification number, and Medic Alert’s hotline phone number. Personnel treating a Medic Alert wearer who is unconscious can immediately check the information on the universally recognized emblem, and call Medic Alert Foundation’s 24-hour hotline for the patient’s computerized emergency medical record. This additional information can be retrieved within 30 seconds of making the call. A wallet card copy of the member's emergency file is issued annually for verification. Medic Alert Week 1986 marks 30 years of service by the California-based non-profit and charitable foundation. Persons interested in learning more about Medic Alert can call Medic Alert Foundation, 1-800-344-3226.
