The development of compact types, such as the Fischer varieties, makes this a reality again. Some geranium producers are growing them as pot plants for fall and winter sales so that they can be enjoyed for several weeks in the home. (In Europe, over 75 percent of zonal geraniums are used indoors.) • A major factor in outstanding geranium performance in recent years is the clean, disease-free plants, produced through scientific culture-indexing propagation programs. Without the inhibition of often unseen diseases, the full genetic potential of geranium growth and flowering potential has been unlocked. The Fischer geranium varieties have been produced under this system of continuous rigorous screening and propagation. The result is outstandingly better outdoor performance. • There are approximately 250 species of geraniums, most native to South Africa. About 10,000 different cultivars have been developed since breeding began hundreds of years ago. To develop the best new varieties, Fischer maintains a Living Geranium Museum of nearly 2,500 different geranium varieties, as well as species, which breeders can use to develop varieties with outstanding traits for introduction to the public. • Fischer trial grounds in different climates evaluate 500 new varieties each year and these trials are run for at least two years before varieties are released to home gardeners. • In Europe, more than 50 percent of geraniums sold are other colors besides red. The breakdown is 30 percent salmon and pink, 25 percent white, violet and special colors, with the balance (45 percent) red. This is different from here where red has dominated geranium useage, although the other colors are increasing here, as a percentage, year by year. • In Europe, nearly 50 percent of all geraniums sold are ivyleafed types (Pelargonium peltatum) with about 75 percent of them used for window boxes and the balance for other containers such as hanging baskets, tubs, and bowls. • Nearly 90 percent of all zonal geraniums produced in Europe are double flowered. The rest are single flowered. Semi-double flowers are non-shattering and the individual flowers and flower umbels have greater depth with the interplay to light within them. Soil pH quiz Soil pH, just one of the many factors that contribute to plant health, affects the chemistry of the soil and the micro-organisms living there. As a result, soil pH can greatly influence the nutrient availability for plant uptake. Test your garden chemistry knowledge with this matching game, courtesy of B.
