The company will notify you in advance of the “due date.” If you decided, upon purchasing your policy, to pay annually, you would get a notice very year, prior to the anniversary date of the policy. If you pay quarterly, you’d get a notice every three months; if monthly, then every month. However, if you have authorized the insurance company to draft your checking account, you will hot receive a premium notice, instead your checking account statement will reflect this and you’ll have a cancelled check to substantiate payment. What if I do not get the premium paid before the “due date?” Answer: Nobody’s perfect. If you miss the “due date”, you will have, in most cases, about a month to pay the premium without penalty. This extra time is referred to as the “grace period.” If your policy has an “automatic loan premium payment” feature, and if there is cash value in your policy, the company will be able to pay your premiums for you — out of this cash value — until that amount has been used up. This automatic payment feature does create a loan, but it’s a feature you may want to consider and talk over with your own life insurance agent.
