sparked Wawasee to a third place finish in regional competition, which was held at home. Merrillville won the meet with 103.35 points. Valparaiso followed with 100.1. C Wawasee scored 91.65 points, edging out Chesterton (91.1) for third. “The difference was my flip between bars,” said Rinker. “I kept the same routine as I did at sectionals. If I fall once, there goes my routine.” “We all knew she was capable of doing what she did today,” said Wawasee Coach Tracy Sumpter. “Her problem is that she puts a lot of pressure on herself. But she prepares herself very well for competition.” “Everybody supported me,” added Rinker. “And I just want to thank my family for their support, especially my dad.” Enjoyed Good Season While Rinker’s season continues one more week, her teammates are done for the year. It was a good year, however.

By Pete Fritehle ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. — The Cincinnati Reds, training at nearby Tampa, are expecting big things in 1986. with Pete Rose managing and additional pitching.
And, as mentioned earlier in this column, the Reds just might be playing Sparky Anderson’s team of the past seven years, the
Wawasee won 12 of 13 meets, added a sectional championship and its only regular season loss came to Homestead, the state’s topranked gymnastics team. “I’m just satisfied that we even got here,” Sumpter said after mentioning that Wawasee was able to qualify all its gymnasts for regionals. “I knew the competition would be tough, but we weren’t really sure how we were going to do as a team. As it turned out, we didn’t hit as a team today.” A former Wawasee gymnastics star, Sumpter added “It was fun to go from being a part of the team when I was a gymnast here, and then coaching it. Just coming back and teaching them what I know and then seeing them put it to use was a new experience for me.” Wawasee Gymnastics Regional Team Scores Merrillville 103.35, Valparaiso 100.1, Wawasee 91.65, Chesterton 91.1, Elkhart Memorial 60.3, Crown Point 48.45, Michigan City

Detroit Tigers, if they reach the Series. Whether they do or not, the Reds play the Tigers in what could possibly be a preview of the 1986 World Series twice next month. On the 17th, the Reds travel to Detroit for an exhibition game. On the 28th, the Tigers travel to Cincinnati for a second exhibition. That’s partly a result of the love of Ohio (and Ohio State) by president Jim Campbell of the Tigers. Campbell was bom at Huron and was himself a standout high school athlete in three sports in high school. He played three years of baseball at Ohio State, after serving three years during the war in the U.S. Navy’s aviation branch.

Warriors ready to compete at Culver By DAVE STRAUB Sports Editor Being confined to the gym can get boring after a few weeks. With only some outside practices and an eagerness for competition, the Wawasee boys’ track team will get a chance to run outdoors in the Culver Invitational this Friday at 5:45 p.m. The Warriors will be competing against Culver Military, Plymouth, Goshen (last year’s winner), Bremen and Churubusco. “Culver is sort of a fun meet for us,” said Coach Jerry Minton. “It’s only a 120-yard track which makes it unusual. The distance men sure don’t like it.” About 40 runners have reported to camp and as of now, Minton is not sure how good Wawasee can be. “A lot of lettermen have come back faster, stronger and probably better,” he said. “But we still have to see how good we can be. From what I have seen, we’re doing okay at this point.” Perhaps the most pleasant surprise for Minton is that he has “an awful good crop of freshmen.” In all, 17 frosh are out for the team, and some will eventually work their way into varsity events, according to Minton. Yet, the Warriors feature solid upperclassmen to carry the load. Wawasee’s top sprinters include Mike Meek and Tim Mangas. Middle distance runners (400-800 meters) include Jeremy Corson, Troy Boyer, Troy Minton and Carl Rouch. These four will also do some distance running (especially the mile). Freshman Jeff Carey will run the 2-mile races. Steve Galegor is Wawasee’s top hurdler (300-meter lows, 110-meter highs) while field events candidates include Steve Sturgill and Scott McDowell (shot put); Jay Rhodes (discus); Todd McCullough (pole vault) and Gary Stuckman (long jump). In addition, Ron Gerber, Rich Karst, Price Pounds and Basil Bonner will see plenty of action in relay races. “After the Culver meet, we’re going to have over a week to prepare for the South Bend Classic,” said Minton. “We’re looking forward to going to Notre Dame. By then, we should be ready to go full tilt.” Last weekend, Minton took 12 team members to a meet at Purdue University. “It was a good thing for them,” he said. “Some of these guys have been working out all winter and were hungry for some competition.” New thought? Former CIA Director Stansfield Turner recommended that the intelligence organizations in the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps be disbanded and their activities centered in the Defense Intelligence Agency.
