Warriors tough in defeat — Warsaw prevails in title game
By DAVE STRAUB Sports Editor Too much size. Too much talent. Too much depth. Too much tradition. This was a task Wawasee faced in last Saturday’s sectional basketball title game against fifth-ranked Warsaw. And the Warriors faced it well, but not well enough as the Tigers prevailed, 62-51 to claim their fourth straight Triton Sectional crown. Warsaw <2O-3) was able to shake away from a vigorous Wawasee effort, courtesy of 6-7 junior center Rick Fox, who was outstanding. Despite a feisty defense that keyed on his every move, Fox scored 30 points and

collected 14 rebounds. Guard Mike Henn added 13 more to spark the Tigers, who will play Westview (21-3) Friday night at the Elkhart Regional. The other contest will feature Northern Lakes Conference champ Concord (18-5) and La Ville (18-6). “We didn’t create many turnovers, we played hard, we played well and I was pleased with the effort,” said Wawasee Coach John Wysong, whose Warriors ended the season 9-13. “We have nothing to be ashamed of. We did an incredible job in front of a large, one-sided crowd, which was a good experience for our players.” The Warriors raced to an early 8-2 lead, thanks to jumpers by
Jon Evans, Tim Mangas and a pair of 15-footers from Bill Hutchinson. Wawasee continued its fine play to establish a 15-11 edge when the first quarter had ended. Then Warsaw found its poise and took control during the next eight minutes. Fox sank two free throws to give the Tigers a 17-15 lead at the 6:06 mark. From there, Warsaw steadily increased its margin to nine points by halftime. A 35-foot bank shot by Darren Miller at the buzzer made it 33-24. “Overall, we held our composure pretty well,” said Tiger Coach Al Rhodes. “Wawasee set good screens and executed their motion offense very well. But we took advantage of some of the things Wawasee thought they could give up.” The Warriors obviously gave up height. According to Wysong, this was one of the contributing factors to Wawasee’s cold shooting (20-54). Yet, the coach was pleased to note that the Warriors played good defense. “Though he (Fox) scored 30 points, I thought we guarded him well,” added Wysong. “They just kept ramming it into Fox. We played a switching man-to-man defense and other players had to help out on Fox. You can’t guard him with one man. What makes him so good is that he has so much mental and physical control.” Though the Warriors did not match up with the Tigers physically, they held their own on the boards, grabbing 33 rebounds. Warsaw had 38. Wawasee also managed to cut into Warsaw’s lead with a 7-2 spurt early in the fourth quarter which made it 45-41. But Fox tallied eight straight points and the Warriors could get no closer than 10. Mangas led Wawasee with 16 points. Hutchinson and Kistler each added 12. “Hutchinson had a fine all around game and Kistler gave us some scoring,” said Wysong. “Coach Wysong did a good job of preparing his team,” Rhodes remarked, noting that he expected a battle from the Warriors. “Most of the Wawasee players will never play basketball after high school, but the attitude’s instilled by Wysong’s program will benefit them for the rest of their lives.” Rip Triton, 67-31 The Warriors overcame a slow start in Friday’s opening-round game against the Triton Trojans

with a hot second half. Wawasee poured in 48 points in the final 16 minutes to claim an easy 67-31 win over the sectional hosts. Mangas led the Warrior attack with 17 points. Hutchinson added 16 more and Kistler enjoyed an excellent floor game, dishing out 11 assists. Evans grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. “We usually don’t get to exploit a team like we did tonight,” said Wysong. “We finally relaxed after the first quarter and played well after that.” The Warriors held a 7-6 edge when the first period ended. By the half, it was 19-8. Then it became a romp when Wawasee canned 20 of 29 shots in the second half. Mark Clauss led Triton with 10 points. Now, the two schools will meet again in the near future as well as playing other organizations.

A booming collegiate-level sport in the eastern United States, lacrosse is a rough mixture of hockey and soccer. Goals are scored, yet lacrosse is played on an open field, much like football and requires speed, agility, quickness, endurance and stick-handling skills. A ball is also used and can be advanced only by the sticks, which have tightly netted baskets. There are 10 players per team on the field. Most of all, lacrosse employs an aggressive physical nature.
